I recently acquired a 1991 Legend (model 1767) to replace my 1981 Legend (model 1617) that was stolen. There are many things I like about the 1767. It's a really sweet guitar that was very gently played by its owner (while I played my 1617 was a lot and it really showed the signs of wear after 25 years of almost constant use).

The only thing I liked better about my 1617 was the neck contour. It seems that the 1767 has a thicker neck. I'd like to know if I'm just remembering wrong or if there was indeed a change in the neck geometry between the two models.

It seems to me that the 1767 has a fuller tone than the 1617 (curious, because the 1617 wasn't cutaway and the 1767 is). Is there a difference in the bracing as well?

I will use it to lead worship for the first time this Sunday and can't wait to hear how it sounds through the system. Enjoying newbie status on the board and learning a lot.

Your 1617 probably had a VT braced top and a regular truss rod in the neck (the giveaway would be if it had a truss rod cover -- if it did have the cover, then it has the VT bracing and truss rod). This would make it lighter in the neck than your 1767 and would give it a different neck profile.

The 1767 definitly has an A braced top and what's called a Kaman Bar in the neck. Gives it a lot of weight in the neck but extreme stability. Much better than just a truss rod. It would not have a truss rod cover on the headstock as the adjustment point is in the body at the base of the neck.

The sound between the 2 is going to be different, both acoustically and plugged in. Acoustically, you'll have a fuller sound with more bass response. Plugged in, you should have a better sound with a newer and more adjustable preamp (OP24? vs. stacked tone/volume or just volume?).

Trust me, you're newer guitar is a better instrument and it won't take long to get used to it. Let us know how it works on Sunday. Maybe even get some pics to post from the service.

Bones--

Thanks for the info. My old 1617 also had a Kaman bar truss rod (I love the look of the headstock without a truss rod cover), but the neck was probably a couple of millimeters different at the top and the bottom of the contour. I think it may have been as thick in the middle as the 1767 is, but it had a little more graceful taper toward the front. Kind of the difference between |_| and \_/. It just feels like there is more neck to get my lazy fingers around on the new guitar ... but I really like the sound and will get used to the neck in time.

Even with the Kaman bar, some Ovation necks have different profiles. I used to have a shallow bowl Balladeer that had the Kaman bar but a very thin neck. Noticeably thinner than my 1537 Elite.

i may be wrong but..taking mass away from the neck could severly alter its strength and may be prone to warping/bowing...just a thought...jason

Beware reshaping a k-bar neck. It can be done, but there ain't a whole lot of wood there. Look at a cross section sometime - kind of like a hotdog wrapped in bacon.

Speaking of hotdogs, anyone been to Crif-Dogs in NYC? They serve deep friend hot-dogs wrapped in bacon. Yummy.
