Do the "pro's" really play Ovations?

Does the Ovation that a professional plays really resemble the same Ovation that you can buy off the shelf? For example, in motocross, Ricky Carmichael rides a Suzuki. However, the factory bikes have probably 35k to 50k in factory modifications to make them perform up to a professional standard. The only thing that really resembles a Suzuki consumers could buy is the name and color. In effect it just becomes a marketing tactic. Do we have the same situation in guitars? Is the Dimeola signature model really what Al would play, or is it really just a name branding? Do the factory sponsored guys get special custom shop models that look like a standard retail model on the outside but in reality they are totally different on the inside?

Like any artist they may add their original touch, or ask for some original touch or accessory, but anyone can do that. In some cases, like with Melissa and Al DiMeola, I have heard they work closely with those artists to create what is sold as the Artist models.

I always thought that the AD and ME models were exactly the same as what those artists actually used in concert.

Just got to think it up and have it made. To the bike analogy, they use different engines, brakes etc. The guitars use the same tops, bowls electronics....
