For those folks within reasonable distance or who have the occasion to be in or around Woodstock, New York...

Levon Helms offers BiWeekly concerts in a Barn in his back yard. He has guest muscians... Elvis Costello , Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Emmy Lou, Donald Fagen to name a few. Theses are small crowds, very intimate around 100 people.

The reviews are crazy good. I'd love to check this out. Levon Helm Midnight Ramble

even though levon's voice is shot it would be cool to check out.

now if I set up in my backyard and charge 200 for a season pass I may be able to pay to finish off my house!!!

Jeff,
Thanks for sharing. The Band has always been a favorite of mine, and its good to see Levon Helm still playing, after his bout with throat cancer.

I get up close enough to Woodstock pretty frequently. I just might have to drop in and see the show.

I can swing by and pick ya up, Al. Pizza first, though.

Tommy, you're right on the way too...

$200 buck a head? Sounds like the punchline to an old Steve Martin routine..

Slightly off topic, but I saw BB King last week from the orchestra pit (he's still got it, BTW). Mavis Staples opened the show and sang The Weight, and told a nice story about Levon etal letting the Staples be a part of The Last Waltz. Mavis doesn't really have the pipes anymore, but she was great nonetheless ... personality can counterbalance diminished skills in a small venue.

the more I read about this the more it reminds me of the coffeehouses I used to play in when I was in college.

I may run out screaming if I find:
a girl in a peasant dress with flowers in her long blonde hair barefoot with hairy legs playing a kalimba

a slightly overweight girl with an acne ridden face hornrimmed glasses wearing levi's and a tube top selling herbal teas, homemade brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

a white chick with an Angela Davis fro but more formed like a poodle poured into jordache jeans and a danskin reading her original erotic poetry.

other ghosts that will cause flashbacks

any chick named Anne, Kathy or Mary IN THAT PARTICULAR ORDER.

women with red hair (as my best friend used to say "dem red haired girls be funny")

a shure vocalmaster pa

yes I have issues.

Hey Al, with a Leonard Cohen chord progression and a little work on the meter you could get a song out of that last post!

An Amazon.com review of a Kalimba:

" What the hell is this?, June 4, 2006
Reviewer: The Tin Man "Serious Reviewer" (New York City) - See all my reviews
Exuse me, but this is not music. No, no, no, no, no. It has it all wrong. It sounds like a giraffe is dying in my apartment when I try to play it, and then when I stop I hear the dying giraffe for like another 2 hours. The African people usually make impressive things. They invented ping pong or something. I don't know. But this is not a good African product, if you enjoy Africa and its stuff. Or maybe this came from somewhere in Asia. Well, I don't expect much from Asia. They have a lot of dying giraffes there, and maybe that's where they got the stupid idea. Well anyways. this is a horrible instrument and never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever buy it in your whole entire life."

Here's a start without ehancing the lyrics with rhyming references to sex or death or over wrought indulgence:

I may run out screaming
if I find a girl in a peasant dress
with flowers in her long blonde hair
barefoot with hairy legs
playing a kalimba

a slightly overweight girl
with an acne ridden face
hornrimmed glasses wearing levi's
and a tube top selling herbal teas,

a white chick with an Angela Davis fro
more formed like a poodle poured

and a danskin reading her original erotic poetry.

other ghosts that will cause flashbacks

any chick named Anne, Kathy or Mary
IN THAT PARTICULAR ORDER.
women with red hair
(as my best friend used to say
"dem red haired girls be funny")

a shure vocalmaster pa, yes I have issues.
