I was at the local music shop drooling today and came across some Lute soundhole covers. Was wondering what these soundhole covers really do for you. Is it for feedback??

They sure looked cool with the carved wood. I think the packages stated light, medium and heavy.

Thanks in advance
Bill :D

i am sure there are some comedians on here that will give you other answers about soundhole covers, but yes, their primary purpose is to prevent feedback especially while playing acoustically through a microphone. there are some real fancy ones nowadays.

The ones that are marketed as "Lute Holes" are fancy expensive wooden versions of a $10 rubber bung which in terms of feedback suppression does a better job and from the audience perspective looks like a normal soundhole from a few feet away.

Lanaki, you are a liitle off with your definition, they are intended for acoustic guitars with pickups, not for acoustic guitars played into microphones.

If they cover the holes . . .

. . . then they're bungs.

Is there a specific model/make of the inexpensive rubber version that can be ordered online? This would be for a Country Artist, the soundhole is 4" diameter.

It's called a feedback buster, distributed by Kaman Music. Shouldn't be difficult to get hold of.

I have a bung hole cover for my O's, but try to get away without using it as it constipates the tone.

I only ever use them onstage and I don't use a full set, I just plug the big holes. It depends a lot of factors such as room acoustics, proximity to monitors, how well the sound system is EQ'd, competence of sound engineers, overall volume level etc etc but generally soundhole bungs will get you maybe 2dB extra headroom before feedback. All they do is shift the guitar's resonant frequency up a little. It's perfectly possible to make a guitar feedback at the higher frequency if you try hard enough.

Jason;

I don't know why you wanna knock back the bass response, but I'd suggest putting in a full set of airlocks and alternately removing certain ones until you achieve what you're looking for . . .

I recently bought a set from Al to use on the treble bout holes on the Adamas LongNeck t'get a little extra "thump" out of it.
Being that it's a cutaway, and I'm really just plugging four little holes, I've deluded myself into thinking that it makes a difference . . .

The only problem was that I think that the LongLegg was made with sound holes slightly larger than other production models as the airlocks don't fit in snugly and are prone to falling out. I took some masking tape and taped the backsides of the airlock together from the inside.

Funny thing was that when the airlocks arrived in the mail, Jeanette watched me open them and followed me down to the MusicRoom to install 'em.

As she was watching me, she said
". . Wait, . . you guys spend all this money on guitars with these fancy little soundholes because they "sound" better . . . right?? . ."

". . Right . ."

". . and then you send more money to Ovation to buy little rubber plugs to plug these holes UP . . right?? . . "

". . yeah, but . . . . ."

Before I could finish, she was walking back up the stairs, shaking her head and muttering
". . No WONDER why Bill's got two houses!! . . ."

maybe its just me but the bass response seems to over power the treble..maybe its just me but i plugged the 2 med. sized holes on the bass side and it sounds better to my ears..like i said maybe its just me..maybe i need to go with a lighter string gauge...jason

Aren't the lute covers just for decoration? They have holes in them and everything, right?

Not a lot of call for an acoustic electric lute.

Jason, remember you're not hearing how it really sounds unless you're out in front of it. Have someone else play it for you and see what you think.

Make about a hundred custom limited edition Ac. El. lutes, and they'll fly off the shelf - if only as a conversation piece.

.....but then don't make any more!

Decorative, yes. but without the cover, the lute's soundhole is acutally larger, and therefor lowering its resonant frequency(if I'm understanding all this audio gibberish). Just like those of you who only plug up some of your bung holes. Maybe lute-(thiers) of old didn't like the deep tone they were getting, so decided to brighten it up with a decorative lute-hole cover

So if we use a smaller bung hole covers so there isn't total coverage will we be able to sing higher?

I had the same impression of my 1581 when I first got it (WOW this thing has a lot of bass!), but when I listened to a friend play it, I was pleasantly surprised to hear how balanced it was.
Higher frequencies are directional, lower frequencies not so much, so the player mostly hears the lows.
