By coincidence there's a piece in the paper today about wild boar becoming a problem in several places in England. Having been hunted virtually to extinction they've made a real comeback.

Obviously not as big as American ones - ours eat a better diet and take some excercise occasionally. They never approach an oak tree and say "Supersize me". Although apparently they are extremely bad tempered.

I've got one tearing up the edges of my pond and other areas of the property. Judging from the amount of damage, I'm gonna need a bigger trap and a bigger gun. I hope he's a little smaller than hogzilla, although the wild ones around this part of Texas probably average about 500 to 600 lbs. Pictures when and if.

I'm sorry. I'm having a hard time envisioning these things just popping up out of nowhere. Boars at 100 lbs or a more? Sure. But 500 lbs and more? And 1,200 lbs? What the freak is going on down there? I mean it - I want names!

Feral pigs and javelinas and crosses between them have always been wild down in the south in large numbers. It just seems they have invaded human inhabited areas alot more recently. Maybe we're just invading their areas more. Hunting them is big sport in alot of areas. And yes, they do get large in the wild with some huge tusks. They can really do alot of property damage rooting up things.

I am, admittedly, totally ignorant in this area (ShutUp, JW) but aren't they relatively aggressive as well? I would think they'd make some news from time to time by people being in the wrong place at the wrong time...and hitting upwards of 1,000 lbs...I would just think that we'd hear more of it I guess. You know, kind of like the shark attacks in FL, serial killer in the NW or bizarre, unexplained uke attacks in AZ and every other totally blown out of proportion deal out there.

Or maybe not...

wild pig usually are most aggressive when they are cornered and have no other means of escape. they do not stalk people or other mammals. in the wild they prefer rooting for vegetation and worms, grubs, etc.
in hawaii they cause much erosion from rooting and also destroy our vulnerable flora and fauna. many people here hunt wild pig and then sell "smoke meat" from the proceeds. the tusks on the boars are razor sharp and are the main line of defense when cornered.
lots of hunters here lose their hunting dogs from tusk lacerations.

Domestic pigs are one of those domesticated animals that are just barely domesticated. They are near genetically indistinguishable from their wild brethren...
Left to the "wild" even an adult [escaped] hog will shortly begin to display the characteristics of their Bore lineage. And if they are taking advantage of food sources made easily available by humans, a once domesticated hog, in a few years, will become a 500 lb tusk wielding, hairy bore with attitude.

No foolin'

Duh!

Currently we have an accused 'mass murderer' on trial in our area (within 600 miles) whose supposed method of disposal was feeding the remains to his pigs. Real hog farmers are upset with this individual (who was not a very efficient farmer) being called a 'pig farmer.'

However, this supports my basic premiss that we are all about two meals away from total chaos.

Trouble with shooting something that big.... you gotta invite the neighbours. And that leads to either returning tools or asking where they are......and with enough alcohol pre-fire.....well, you get the idea.

Did you know?:
Pigs have been domesticated from wild boar on at least seven different occasions, in regions as diverse as central Italy, India, Burma, Thailand and New Guinea.
