Location: south east Michigan | So...you think we get kind of "geeky" here at the OFC??? Ha! Not even close!
When flat panel TV sets came out I told my wife of my six year plan to get one. I'm about 5 years into it and all is going as scheuled. Our current TV is 12 years old and starting to show it's age and flat screens are now in the mainstream.
To get educated on the topic I went to the TV forum at C-Net to ask a few questions. Holy smoke... these guys talk in a completely obsure language. 1080dpi vs 740dpi vs. 2.5ms vs 8ms vs HMDI vs SXRD vs aaarrrrg! To much information!!!
I want to make and educated choice but I don't need to make yet another hobby of it. But it should not come as a surprise at a time when a "simple" clock-radio comes with a 15 page instruction book.
I just want to be able to grasp the "honey-wheat, woody undertones" of the Sony XRB60QXT-J12. Is that to much to ask??? |

Location: SoCal | Brad, our 37" RCA tv finally died last year after 10 good years of service. We went out to possibly buy a flat screen tv but were overwhelmed by the choices and what had to go into a purchase. We ended up buying a modern version of what we had for $500. Works great. We figure that in a couple of years when all the features become more standardized, we go backand revisit the subject. |

Location: south east Michigan | That's not a bad plan Paul. Wait a year the price on a flat panels will fall more than enough to cover the $500 you spent.
They sure don't make it easy to buy one.
I'm still months away of pulling the trigger but I think I will take the plunge. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Same boat here. The 27 inch Toshiba has been perfect for about 10 years, but it looks so small and my eyes are getting worse. That's my story anyway. Have decided on an LCD and I don't have too much room. In a couple months the prices should be down and then something better and cheaper will come out righ after we buy something. |

The CES Show (the NAMM of ConsumerElectronics) is going on right now in Vegas. With the new models coming out & being ordered, a lot of retailers will be marking stuff down to make room for the new inventory. |

I know that there's some sort of standardization going on and that they will go totally HDTV eventually. When that happens, and when the current TV dies, then I'll get a flat panel TV.
Right now, all our computer monitors are flat panel. They use less energy then a regular monitor. |

But never in a costume.
My living room has movie posters from Star Trek I, The Iron Giant, The Little Mermaid (for my wife), and a pre-production Star Wars print signed by Ralph McQuarrie and David Prowse.
The first thing I'll watch on the new TV will be the Rings trilogy. |

My Mom has the poster, it is pretty trashed (was hung on a wall, not kept in a vault), but I bet it would be worth something to somebody someday. |

His other instructions were that we only wanted ONE remote and show me which button to push to make it work. He did but we stopped watching back in the October. Couldn't stand all the campaign adds. Haven't turned the TV on yet this year. Daytona's not till February anyway... |

Consider the Boxlight Projection system. Easier to update but HUGE!
Computer monitors are coming out in the Widesceen format as well.

Let me know if you need more info, i can help you out. I did my homework last year and ended up with a 51" Hitachi with all the gizmos for about 1200$. Once you watch football on HD, you will never turn back to the dark side.. :)

There's NOTHING like having 6 or 8 things open at once, and having the ability to just s-l-i-d-e things back&forth between the two monitors if y'need to . . . |

He purchased one specifically to watch the Superbowl, and then returned it back for a full refund after the game. |
