Hello all,

I'm new here - I started following some of the discussions here a few months ago, because I was checking out the possibility of purchasing an Ovation. I am enjoying the attitude here on the forum - an interesting blend of styles and topics!
I don't believe I can contribute much on the subject of Ovations.

I live in Israel, on a small kibbutz, and am an organic farmer. The range of Ovation models at the licensed distributor here is very poor (well, it IS a small market) - and I started to check around here on the used market and on the web.
I have played for a few years on a 1613 that was lent to me - really enjoyed it. I started looking for used nylon string models here, but a former teacher of mine beat me to it - he located a guitar about a month ago, purchased it, and he has asked me to help him identify it, as it has no serial number on the inside, and he isn't that good with English. The guitar is in very good condition.
Looking through the Ovation archives, I have identified it as an "Old Country Artist N724".
http://www.ovationguitars.com/index.cfm?fa=detail&mid=1386
I'd be happy if anyone who is familiar with this model could supply me with any feedback about it, other than what appears on the Ovation site archive. For example, when this model was manufactured, how does it match up to the other Artist models, etc.

I will probably have some more questions, but let's see if I'm accepted first...
Thanks!

I never even heard of that model till your post. One difference I see from the specs between the 1624 Country Artist and the N724 is the top. The 1624 was spruce and the N724 is cedar. Cedar seems to be matched with nylon strings more often. You're probably used to it from the 1613. I would think they'd sound similar, except the N724 wouldn't have as much bass with the shallow bowl joined to the neck at the 14th fret vs. the deep bowl joined at the 12th.
As far as the age, check the reference section above against the serial number inside the bowl by the neck. You can also check the lists in the reference section that show when each model was made.

Hello Mark - thanks for the input. I have already noticed the differences you have mentioned, as they are described in the specifications. I agree with you that the fact that this model only has a shallow bowl probably makes the sound less powerful than in the 1613. And as I stated, there is no serial number inside the bowl - but I will check the lists you mentioned. I'd post a photo, but I don't see that I have this option.

Just checked the lists - for some reason they state that this model has a spruce top, not an AA cedar as stated on the Ovation site (the list says that the number 24 indicates a country artist 14 fret model with spruce top). And if I check "for the latest data" about the list of models, this model doesn't appear. So I suppose there's some sort of confusion here.

The Ovation website isn't always accurate. Can you tell by looking whether it seems to be cedar or spruce? Cedar is a bit darker. Without the serial number, I don't know how to get an accurate date of manufacture.

I only have photos I have been sent - is it possible for me to upload one? The top looks like cedar or pine - resembles the color of the 1613 I had.

This is a guitar that was built for the overseas market. I've never seen one in person, so I can't say, w/o looking at a photo, whether it has a cedar or spruce top. I wouldn't trust what's on the Ovation website. I would also guess that it's got the VT-8 (?) bracing, not the Ovation fan. As far as I can tell, it's essentially a straight Country Artist, but I really don't know for certain.

Why not send Kim or John an email to see what they know?

Hello moody, p.i - sorry for the question, but if you're addressing me, I don't see contact details for Kim or John. And I'd appreciate instructions for uploading a photo here, if this is possible.

Kim and John are Kim Keller and John Budny, Ovation/Hamer Customer service. They can be emailed from the Ovation webpage.

As to pictures, I'm very non tech, but somebody here will explain the process....

It was probably made for Nakao in Japan. it would have been a 1724 with whatever was special for Nakao hence the N724.
Probably a great guitar, grab it.

Hey Joe! Welcome!

Post your photos over on the ning site and attach a link to your email.
Also you can post photos here.
Post your photos on Photobucket first, then use the Full Reply Form, below...
Copy the 'Image Location' from your photobucket pic and paste it to the window that will open when you hit the 'image' button.
You can also transfer photos from the Ning site using that method.
(But that won't work if you have 'rotated' the photo on the ning site)

Then we can all see them too.

OK, the pics are here :
http://ovationfanclub.ning.com/photo/albums/ovation-n724

I haven't seen the guitar personally, yet, but the neck width at the nut is 1 7/8", and, as can be seen, the neck has 14 frets. I'd appreciate any feedback on this guitar, and if anyone can affirm that this is indeed an N724 (http://www.ovationguitars.com/index.cfm?fa=detail2&mid=1386#), what wood is it made from, date of manufacture, etc. Again, there is no serial number inside the bowl. Thanks.

It looks exactly like a 1724 that I used to own. Spruce top, shallow bowl (mid depth), stacked tone/volume control at the waist. Bet it was even made in 1983 like mine was.

Really a great guitar, a player. Ok acoustically, but great plugged in.

I don't know what the difference is between this guitar and my 1724 except this one was designated for a different market.....

Hi moody, p.i. - how is it that I don't see the guitar you mention (1724) in the Ovation archives ("discontinued items"), or anywhere on the website? Am I missing something? Remember, this is a nylon string.

That's what happens when I listen to Bill regarding model numbers.

It was 1674. It's not listed on the Ovation website archives (it's not a perfect list), but you'll find info on it here.

Yep, it seems you're right - in the pics I uploaded you can see 20 frets and what appears to be a shallow bowl. So it does indeed appear to be a 1674.
Does the top look like sitka spruce to you? Thanks very much - the ancient newsletter is also interesting...

if it's spruce it's sitka, it's all that was used other than cedar and grafite.

OK, good.

While we're at it, I had another subject I wanted to ask you people - maybe there are members here outside of the States that can chip in.

My chances of finding a good second hand nylon string Ovation here are pretty slim - even slimmer now that there's one less on the market here - and I am considering purchasing one online from a dealer in the U.S. (the dollar is at a comfortable rate for me right now). Preferably a new one, as I have no way of knowing in what condition a second hand guitar will be in before purchase. I'm looking at the 2073LX, or the 14 fret models.

My question is, does anyone have experience with this kind of overseas online purchase, and with which dealers have they worked with? Does anyone know of reliable dealers that do int'l shipping?
Thanks.
