Is it absolutely prohibited to update the electronics in my 1581 2-knobber, reverse-red burst?

Who's going to prohibit it? It's a free world. Do what you need to to make the guitar the best possible configuration for YOU. Dave

I think (as does Tony) that the reissue two knob electronics sounds much much better than the originals. Depending on the price, I would seriously consider an upgraded two knobber (but not to one of the cans)!

John, you can do it but think seriously about it - IMHO, resale will go down.

John, go with the redesigned 2 knobber preamp. You'll have a sound to match anything else out there (keep in mind that the original preamp in your guitar is a 30 year old design). You'll be very happy with the sound you get from the redesigned 2 knobber.

The stacked preamp in my GC reissue is a redesign of the original, but better. Plugged in it is incredible.... much better than any other guitar I own.

IF it was me ... I'd leave the 2 knobs for looks and put in the FD14 electronics. That's exactly what's on Jerome's Adamas II Slothead and whoever decided to make it that way was very wise.

First of all, an owner of a guitar has the right to do anything to it with out worrying about whether he or she will be criticized.

However, maybe I missed something...why would someone cut into the bowl, etc., when there are OP-24 (or newer) pre-amp guitars?

I had a 1681 that I put an OpPro in. Loved it that way.

I learned a lesson on this guitar...I was prepared to make a decent bid on the guitar but backed off due to an OFC'er bidding. Now, there is a question whether it will be sold and/or modified.

So, maybe this is why I have taken my position in this thread.

I just see something wrong in taking a 2-knobber and cutting...I have a 1990 1681 (OP-24) that I would upgrade if I needed but I wouldn't do it to one of my 2-knobbers. Just doesn't seem right. As I wouldn't cut into the 1537. And, as there is a collectibility element to a 2-knobber, unless you were going to keep it, it would probably reduce the value.

Need a better pre-amp? Sell the 2-knobber and get one with a newer pre-amp.

Or get the new version of the two knobber that came out with the reissues. They sound fantastic and should be a drop in fit for the factory.

I've played out with it 2 times now and as-is it blows everyone else away! I have no complaints with this preamp (I WOULD like a tuner). I just wanted to hear from you old Adamas owners to get your opinion.
The idea of getting the new 2-knob electronics sounds like a good idea. Time to email Kim. Thanks everyone.

PS- Tony, I've fallen in love with this guitar (as has everyone who's seen it) and I'm sure I MUST keep her. I was looking for YOUR opinion and it has solidified my own. Thank you.

Kim's answer:
The new preamps are $300. They are better than the old preamps, but unless your pramp is completely dead, um...well...they are $300!!

Since I barely escaped with my life on this purchase..think I'll wait.

Grab one of the cheap Seiko clip on tuners that JeffW, I, and several others use. Cost about $40 and works great. I grab it 90% of the time even when the guitar has a tuner built in.
