This from another discussion group. From a very talented full time professional player...
What brand do you think he is talking about? (I've removed model designations to enhance curiosity)

IMO the 'new' guitars are definitely head-and-shoulders above the 'old' ones both as far as consistency and quality are concerned. I've seen quite a few of them now and there was absolutely nothing wrong with any of them. The setup is also very consistent - but it's such an individual matter that I can't say if it will be right for you.

As far as the bass is concerned, of course the XX sounds bigger than the YY - the larger shape seems to have more power, however the sound - and bass - of the YY is more focussed (not sure about the spelling here) and I think travels better - it's a great guitar to play OUT, not IN. This is a bit of a paradox - because you'd think that the bigger guitar would 'throw' the sound over a longer distance but it doesn't really.

I talked to Woody Mann about this and he said something along the lines of: "Think of a garden hose - if you squeeze the end of the hose, the water will shoot much further."

Also, as all jumbo guitars, the XX is much more difficult to tame in high-volume situations (live) whereas I've been very happy with my YY on stage.

Let's rule out Ovation because they are not described as "jumbo" and "larger".
That being said, it could refer to any number of wood box guitars.
My gut feeling, wild-ass guess is......Gibson.

are XX and YY the same brand just different styles within the brand or are XX and YY two different brands?
if same brand, i vote Gibson also.

Just one single brand...

and of course not Ovation, which is precisely why I found this interesting, as these topics are the very things Ovation has developed it's technology around...

woody also plays a lowden, jeff. (by the way, have you visited dream guitars site recently? he's got several new lowdens in.)

since you like lowdens and they are now coming in smaller sizes, i am changing my vote to lowden.

Ding-Ding-Ding... It is of course, Lowden...

I have to curtail my visits to DreamGuitars, as the GAS it induces in me, on a daily basis, is not conducive to my long term financial well-being... I dream of winning a 15 minute shopping spree at that place.... or breaking and entering...

Again, I find it very interesting that players of "Up-market" guitars are discussing the very attributes that make Ovation what they are, yet, one would be hard pressed to catch a glimpse of an Ovation in those circles.

I think everyone needs a FD-14.

i will be paying a visit to paul at DreamGuitars in june. (no pun intended on the "paying").

you are just a hop, skip and a jump from asheville so let's start making our plans now for the breaking and entering. or perhaps you are good at diversionary tactics?

Unfortunately it's not white sand but German snow. Anyway, the FD-14 is the best sounding wood-top Ovation I know.
