Location: Montreal, Canada | I'm looking for some advice. I found a 1114 for sale in my area in good shape. Seller says it's got a minor crack that is not affecting the sound of the guitar. From the s/n, it was bulit in 1981.
I would like to put nylon strings on it. As it is a deep bowl, i think that the sound should be very good. Is there anything i should look for before goin on with this little project ?

Location: Scotland | Yes, look for a nylon string guitar and put the correct strings on the Folklore. The bowl is irrelevant, the top is braced for steel strings so the lower tension nylon strings won't work too well. |

Location: Upper Left USA | The 1114 and 1614 are made for steel strings and putting nylon strings on will not yield very good results. Likewise, the Nylon strung/designed guitars like the 1113 and 1613 are built for nylon strings and steel strings will eventually injure the instrument. |

Location: Montreal, Canada | I will try to buy it for sure. I can get it for about 300$. I will have to change the strings anyway, so i'm gonna try it with nylons just to see how it sounds.
If it's not good, i'll just put a new set of steel strings. I'm sure it's gonna be a very good guitar one way or another. It will complement my 1778LX just fine until i can get my hands on a 1773LX.... :)

Location: Boise, Idaho | Mauray, I have a beautiful Folklore. It's a 1614, which is like yours, but with electronics. I got it cheap off ebay (a little over $300) because the guy who owned it tried to do exactly like you did. He thought it was a nylon string guitar. He got as far as 3 strings and then gave up. You will have a tough time getting the 3 nylon strings to stay because the bridge isn't made for nylon strings. It will be hard to keep them from slipping. The nylon strings may not fit in the slots on the nut. The tuners may be a little too wide. And then, if you get them to stay, it won't sound that great. The Folklore is a great sounding and playing steel string guitar. Why even try to see if you can turn it into a poor to fair sounding nylon string guitar? |

I'll keep on watching to get me a nylon string Ovation. They don't come around too often....or i'll get me a 1773LX next spring !!

Location: Boise, Idaho | Mauray, I didn't mean to talk you out of buying the Folklore. It sounds like it was a good deal and you should be able to get your money out of it if you decide not to keep it.
Watch ebay for a Classic 1713, 1613, 1763 the Country Artist models, usually 1624s. Check the Ovation site for the discontinued models. I prefer the sound of the 1713 over the 1624, but the 1624 is more playable. The neck is a little narrower. I spent only a little over your $1000 budget for the 1713, 1614 and 1624 all together. The 1713 and 1614 are in perfect condition. The 1624 has a few dings. I don't believe that one guitar fits all and we need some variety. |

Location: Montreal, Canada | No worries Mark, it won't stop me from getting the 1114. I'm probably gonna try to get it anyway because the price is good and it would be a good match for me. Currently, i'm mostly learning fingerpicking on my classical (2" neck) and then switch to my Elite with the narrow neck. The 1114 would allow to find something right in between... :)
I'll keep looking for a classical Ovation for sure and if i can't find something before spring, i'll probably spend my tax return on a 1773LX !!

Location: Boise, Idaho | Now you tell us you already have a classical guitar. Try to find a Country Artist (1624). It has a little narrower neck, semishallow bowl and 14 fret neck. Made to play Classical Gas. That would make a trio with a good deal of variety. |
