I'm can't give you much to go on.
This was used in the backround of a West Wing episode called, I think... "War Of The Roses".
The key word of the chorus is "Alleluja".
The vocals are rather mornful and desperate.
Not much help I know but I bet someone here knows it.

edit... Accually the name of the episode was.."Posse Comitatus" which probably is no help at all.

Gee Brian.... do you think we could pull it off???
That would be something you don't hear everyday.

Hallelujah - by Leonard Cohen

C Am C Am
Now I've heard there was a secret chord, that David played, and it pleased the Lord
F G C G
But you don't really care for music, do you?
C F G Am F
It goes like this, The fourth, the fifth, The minor fall, the major lift
G E Am
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
F Am F C G C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
__________________________________________________________________________________

C Am C Am
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof, you saw her bathing on the roof
F G C G
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
C F G Am F
She tied you to a kitchen chair, she broke your throne and she cut your hair
G E Am
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
F Am F C G C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

___________________________________________________________________________

C Am C Am
You say I took the Name in vain, I don't even know the Name
F G C G
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
C F G Am F
There's a blaze of light in every word, it doesn't matter which you heard
G E Am
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
F Am F C G C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
____________________________________________________________________________

C Am C Am
I did my best, it wasn't much, I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
F G C G
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
C F G Am F
And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the Lord of Song
G E Am
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
F Am F C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
F Am F C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
F Am F C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
F Am F C G
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
F Am
Hallelujah, Hallelujah...

Really???
Seems like a pretty dark song for that.

I haven't found any meaning in the words yet but the structure and feel of the song kinda draws me in.

Basically it's Leonard Cohen saying, "The Buddhist retreat thing was cool but baby you look hot. Wanna do it with a monk? I speak fluent symbolism!"

That song depicts King David and his sin with Bathsheba. He saw her from his room bathing on her roof and couldn't resist the temptation.

My favorite version is Jeff Buckley's. It's on the Grace album.

Also there are several verses that aren't in SlipKid's post. Here's two more...

Well, baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and walked these floors
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch,
but love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Well, maybe there's a God above,
but all I ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
It's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Wilblee, I don't believe those extra verses were Cohen's original lyrics.

Yeah, you're probably right, but I've heard a version where he sings that second verse, so maybe he added 'em later. Kinda like all those Linda Ronstadt versions of Warren Zevon's songs. Warren even started singing the lyrics that Linda used, so I assume he wrote 'em.

"Now I've heard there was a secret chord,
That David played, and it pleased the Lord" --Slipkid

Wasn't that the premise for the album: In Search Of The Lost Chord (Moody Blues?)
Also, there was a particular episode of South Park, where a certain chord caused everyone to spontaneously poop their pants.

I have found a few different versions of this song. Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, K.D. Lang, and Bob Dylan have put their own spin on it. The Buckley version is very nice while the Dylan version is... well.... awful.

I was surprised how basic the chords were.
And I'm trying to make sense of the words. One verse seems to be told in a narative while another is told in first person. It seems to be about a relationship that burned hot at first and then died.
Maybe it's not supposed to make sense in a logical way. The words do evoke a feeling tho.

Brad... it's a Leonard Cohen song. I wouldn't try to read too much into it.

Seems like a pretty dark song for that.
For a cartoon about an ogre with no social skills, a schizophrenic woman with violent tendencies and a possessed jack-ass? Seems like a perfect fit.

There is a Wikipedia entry about the song. I tried putting in the link, and the parentheses nixed that working here for some reason.

A good bit of history about the lyrics, including that Cohen has 15 verses. Plus some possible interpretations of the lyrics.
