Location: Sunshine State, Australia | How does one tell what version of Ovation hard case you own? I cant see any 'labelling' on mine.
Do all O hard cases have the Ovation logo embedded? My 1768's case doesn't have the Ovation logo. Could it be an imposter? The 1768 fits nicely in it, but my 05 collectors doesn't.
Finally, what do the 'deluxe' cases have that the 'cheap' ones don't? |

Location: Warren,Pa. | This question is getting harder to answer these days. A new case comes with a little white sticker on the outside at the headstock end. That sticker is the only thing that actually says what model it is.
All 9158 cases have the Ovation logo inside the top. They have the most durable, impact resistant outer shell, and the inner styrofoam moulded shell fits better than any other case.
I got an 8158 with my 6778 LX. I swear it had the same outer shell as the 9158. The plush lining was the same also. The styrofoam mould didn't fit the guitar as well as the 9158.
Then there's the 8158 with the outer shell that's very obviously different. It's very brittle and cracks very easily. A couple of years of putting it down in the parking lot to open your car door and it's a mess of cracks.
9158 is the best way to go. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | PS- TKL makes the 9158. The very different 8158 is made in China. That 8158 (that's what the sticker said) that came with my 6778LX was made by TKL and had the Ovation logo inside like a 9158. It really is getting hard to keep this straight. |

Location: Portland, OR | Seriously.. what is it with all of this case crapola? My 2078 is supposed to come with the 9158.. When it arrived, the case was cracked and the plastic looked kinda thin.. Inside was plush, but the guitar slightly rocked from neck to base, and it had a tiny made in china sticker on the headstock.. so I concluded it was the 8158. I called the store, and they apoligized for the broken case, and the case mixup, and agreed to send out a 9158. I get it today, and it does have a white barcode on the head that says 9158 (a sticker that is easily removable and put on any case). The inside of the case is SLIGHTLY more form fitting. The guitar no longer rocks, and I guess there is a little more padding around the edges. There is no 'ovation' logo inside though. The case itelf seems pretty much the same otherwise.. its not noticably heavier or anything else. The store I bought this from also said that starting in 2007, all O's except for the Adamas line will be shipping in the 8158.. So what gives Ovation? It seems irresponsible to market 2 different cases, sell each at different prices, but have no labeling system whatsoever. It is almost as if they support the case switching that is going on at stores..They certainly make it easy enough. Further, I think most people buying a guitar from around $800 and up would opt to spend the extra $50 for the nicer case - so why all the deception?! Either way, both cases are not what I would call high end.. If I were to have an Adamas costing $3k +, I don't think I would be happy about transporting them in these cases, let alone shipping. |

Thanks for the suggestion Richardd.
When I took the warranty card out of the replacement case, the guitar was a 1598MEII.. so I guess it is the 9158. I trust these guys would switch stickers to convince me, but I think throwing a warranty card in the case from an adamas would be out of their league for creativness. |

However, in the late 80's, my Custom Balladeer 12-string got bumped during a move and did a "flying walenda" with a 1 1/2 gainer multiple somersault down a flight of concrete stairs with what would have been a bone-crunching back-splat in any swimming pool on the concrete below. :eek: :eek: :mad: :mad: :(
The acrobatics tore one of the buckles clean off!!! The Ovation logo went missing entirely and was never seen again. :confused:
The guitar didn't have a scratch. To this day, it's never needed any repair except replacing worn out frets.
What can I say, the cases are ugly and seem flimsy sometimes, but I'll NEVER say they can't take a beating and protect what's inside. :cool: |

Location: Phoenix AZ | A lot of us complain about the flimsy ovation cases. I'm probably at the head of thr pack. I would guess the case costs Ovation about $25. It does an OK job of protecting the guitar. Maybe it's in line with a $700-$1000 guitar, but HARDLY what you would expect in the $2000. and above range.
The fact that the 47RI at $4000. came in such a cheap piece of crap was a joke. And I'm thrilled that Al has correct that situation for the OFC guitar.
BUT ... Ask your self this question. Maybe the cheap-o case is part of the equation of why Ovation guitars are so affordable to the masses. If you were shopping for a Legend or an Elite, would you pay $100. extra for a better case? Most probably would not. I do wish they would offer a deluxe case (evan as an extra charge option) on the higher end guitars.

Location: Scotland | I fail to see the problem here. Why have a bomb-proof case unless your guitars are subjected to situations where such a case is needed. The vast majority of high-end guitars never leave the house, never mind get checked into an aircraft hold or thrown into the back of an Econoline. There would appear to be a couple of grades of Ovation cases but the better of them do a perfectly adequate job unless you are gigging heavily and/or touring internationaly, in which case you or your record company can afford to buy a custom made flight case such as a Calton or Mark Leaf or something with whatever is left over from the cocaine budget |

Location: Australia | I agree with Tuppy. A guitar like a #47RI (or any high end O) deserves a better case than what they're sold in.
I gig regularly and my Hiscox case has outlasted two O cases.
I remember when I was involved with selling Taylor's, they were shipped in a beautiful plush handmade 5 ply case.
I see the case as part of the package. |

Location: Taiwan | A very similar thread just fizzled out a week ago over at the Fender site. The same points were made on both sides.
IMHO - a good guitar should come with decent basic coverage, and the option to swap for a fairly priced "Deluxe Case Upgrade."
That said, the 9158 blows doors on what Fender is shipping on strats. I did pay $800 for the Ovation and $1400 for the strat and that likely affects my opinion about the whole thing. |

Location: Townsville, Australia | My beauiful TKL 5 ply case holding a Gretsch G6193 Country Club was dropped by some airline emply; negligable damage, but the guitar got a crack in teh solid spruce top and the binding broken on the lower bout.
How well would the O case, which seems stronger to me have handled it; dont' know, but 5 ply bends enough it seems to allow damage. And the O seems almost as strong as the Samsonite suitcase I have used for 20years. And I wait and see.
I look for an indestructable for the Gretsch now. |

Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado | All three of my acousitcs came with the old brown case. Maybe it's just good luck, but I have never worried about these cases being too light duty. One (the 1112) went on the road in 74 and has been almost everywhere. It has fallen out of busses and the back of pickup trucks. It has had power amps and other guitar cases stashed on top of it. It's been rained on, hailed on (once) and just generally treated like a piece of road equipment.
I am looking at it as I type, and with the exception of the black tape needing to be re glued and a couple of scratches, it looks new. I just wish all of my cases were this durable. I don't know if you can put any of the newer style guitars in the older case, but if you can, give it some thought.
P.S. If someone has another old brown deep case they want to sell, I would be interested.

All 9158 cases have the Ovation logo inside the top. Sorry, the 9158 case (was on the sticker) I got with the UTE didn't have the Ovation logo on the inside as some have that I've seen. I kind of like the brown cases better also. I now have two brown, and one black one. |
