I just got home and found the UTE on the front doorstep. Waited about 2 hrs. and opened it up. Boy does it sound and feel good. Anyone who has reservations about sending one back to the factory for a recondition, just email me and I will give a glowing report. John and co. are absoulutly, whitout a doubt, the most consumer focused group you will find. This guitar is new now, and sounds fantastic! The 1681 is there now for a new neck, and I know it will be new as well when I get it back. Great job, guys!! :D :D :D

Have to change yours signature line now, Jim. Enjoy! You still got a great deal on it. Isn't it a cannon? Try sitting across from someone else who plays it. I thought it was bass heavy until I did that. It is actually quite balanced.

Jim, great news.

I suspect you will not be putting it down all night, so will not expect a reply! :) :)

Enjoy, you lucky dog!

The UTE is on the top of my wish list. Second to that is a 1688-5 12 string. That's all folks!
I'm happy for you jp and glad to know the Mothership takes such good care of its earthlings.

Jim,

What did you have done to the Ute, and why did your A II need a new neck?

The UTE was damaged in shipping (three braces were loose when I got it) so I sent it back to have them, and any other issue repaired. They found a spot on the neck, so it was refinished also.

The 1681 had been played enough (by someone else) to have quite a bit of fret wear, wear of the fingerboard, and it also had a crack at the heel where it meets the body. Rather than repair it, I decided to do it right and replace the neck. They are also going to refinish the bowl (some scratches on the bottom). Sooooo, it should be new when I get it back.

"BTW; How do you like the 1 3/4" neck?"

It felt a little strange at first, Mike, even after playing the 1614 for the last month. But after an hour or so, now it feels like home. I think this nutwidth is the perfect one for me, as I have rather fat...er..plump..no ...Manly fingers! But the sound of this thing is something else. I wish everyone could try one just to hear the projection and tone quality. (disclaimer, this is not to be misconstrued as an offer or binding contract to give, or otherwise loan said instrument.) :D

What Jim said!

The UTE is an absolute tone monster. That combined with the wider 12 fret neck make it the one I grab all the time. My 1681 is neglected and that is saying something because it is a joy to play as well.

When/if a UTE comes up for sale, be prepared to jump. There will be no regrets, ever.

Brad, you were asking about the ute vs the 1681 before, I know I will have a hard time setting this one down and picking up the 1681 when it gets back, but I have made myself a promise that I will not neglect any of the guitars in favor of just one. (they get jealous)

Jim,

It will be interesting to hear your opinion. I've got mine and have developed a preference. I'm biased towards the UTE. That takes nothing away from the 1681, it is just that the UTE is so awesome.
