Wow, I had a fantastic time today browzing my favorite corporate website (of a guitar maker). Just loved reading all the detailed specs and detailed multi-angle hi-res photos of the new models introduced today at NAMM. The next best thing to being there.

Just out of curiousity I stumbled to the Ovation website. Last update Dec-2006. Nothing new. Went over to Adamas. Their last news release was December ... 2005 !!! Why even HAVE a f*cking website ??? What an absolute freaking joke.

Take it easy, Dave. I agree with you 100%. Just take a deep breath....thats it....easy now....Now, go play one of your many guitars and relax. The men in the white coats should be there soon.

I posted this observation a few days after joining the OFC. There were no comments or replies so I figured I was treading on "hallowed ground". I was griping that there aren't even photos of the available Ovation cases on the Ovation website. Whazzup wit dat?

Lucky for them there's the OFC!

My daughter is a web designer. I suggested she apply for a job. I understand that even a good designer can't do anything if the company doesn't provide content. Many companies just don't put their website at the top of the priority list.

Lanaki, no such thing as Hallowed ground. The People at Cayman need to hear more bitching like this. Not that they'll do anything about it, but they should. The answer will be, "Yes, we need to do that, but there are other things in line before it and of course, there are those quarterly earnings reports.........."
Probably no responce to your post cause it's really old news, and hasn't changed and more than likely never will. I think something just got Old Dave really wound up, By the way Dave, what was that really good site? You can mention it here, that way the people from Bloomfield will know where to go look to see how it should be done.

Ovation doesn't "do" the webpage. HiP Designs does. I've seen them exhibit at a coupla tradeshows (I think I might've even done their booth once).

It IS up to Ovation to provide them with current content, tho . . .

Websites are everything these days. Are they relying on paper brochures to advertize new info? They can't be relying on the salespeople in the music stores...the salespeople in the stores don't know anything about Ovation guitars! How much money does it take to have an up-to-date website. I don't even look there anymore!

Hey, I can't spell for shit, no news there.
Yes, they do make very good guitars, and better all the time too. The 47RI, the 2080D and all the rest. It's probably a good thing they don't push these strongly, then they'd get more orders and have to hire more people and make more......

Probably the Martin website - nice guitars with the rollover type selector for the pics. Check out the OMC Artinger.

To be fair, the Ovation site has had a few items updated, even though a lot of their information is confusing or just plain wrong, but to have their premier site, Adamas, to be so sparse on info is just sick. At least if they didn't have anything new on there, they should have more info on the older guitars, or perhaps, dare I say, a search box.

OK ... if this were a Martin board, I can see the complaining now ...

"Did you see the newsletter with the NAMM information? What's up with this? Nothing but a bunch of washed up old guys selling Martins! Check out the front cover! Crosby, Stills and Nash? Their flippin' fat old grandfathers for crying out loud! Roger McGuinn? He hasn't done jack since 1968. Tom Johnston? The Doobie Brothers went out of style the same time as bell bottoms! And tie-dye Felix the Cat? WTF? Felix the Cat was washed up when my Dad was still in diapers. What's up with the marketing people at Martin? Hello? It's a new century!"

Marketing investment results in higher costs. It's a tricky balance. We like our Ovations because they a a great value. Part of that is because Ovation does not have a huge marketing budget to figure into the cost of the guitar.

Keeping up a website is not cheap. Done right, you're talking $200K startup costs and $250K/year ongoing. That's not an insignificant per unit cost for someone like Ovation USA.

they've already got the start-up investment made. hire someone in-house rather than outsourcing to keep it current and it would not cost them near $250K.

edited: since their start-up costs were spent without an outside agency, they may have to start over from scratch though.

I'll talk my daughter into doing it for lots less than $250K per year if I get the difference in guitars.

People think I'm just on some martin soapbox ... but I'm sorry the website I was referring to is in fact martin. I'm sure there are other examples as well.

Ovation builds some very nice models these days and I try hard to be a good embassidor for them. But in so many peripheral ways, they make it very difficult. The shitty website is one example.

I'm not going to go on and on about this, I'll just simply say the following, which was told to me by my grandfather long ago: "You will never regret doing a first class job of something, even if first class isn't necessarily required."

I like that quote.

Sounds like your grandfather was first class!

If your gotta stand on a soap box, you've picked the right one. Then again, some choices are not all that difficult!
