Do you guys with big guitar collections have special call routing into your homeowners insurance agent? I know it will vary widely with the company, but at what price point would one want to notify the insurance company about your guitar(s)? Presumably at some level they would want to charge you for additional coverage.. what are people paying "above and beyond" to insure their guitars?

I think we came up with a value of about $6000, which surprised me. I had told a friend that all my Ovations didn't cost as much as his Taylor, but then I added a few. I don't remember if there was any kind of limit for musical instruments separate from our policy limits. I don't think so. Our personal property coverage just has to cover the replacement value of everything in the house if we have a fire or something. Some of the other guys probably have special circumstances. When this issue came up last, my wife started a list of my guitars with an approximate value, so she can try to sell them after she kills me for buying too many guitars.

I have $XXX,XXX of "contents coverage" written into our homeowner's policy and my guitar should be covered. People with much more substantial collections will most likely have additional coverage, but I'm not sure what those rates are like. Even those policies might limit the guitar's use--not sure on that one, just speculation. My wife's wedding ring is another story. We pay 1% of the appraised value every six months. Essentially it will take us 50 years to pay enough premium to have paid for the ring again (in today's dollars). I know it's somewhat of a scam, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Too much sentiment (and monetary value) in one small object for both of us to risk. I'm interested to see what people like Dave (Tupperware) are paying for collections of instruments. Oh, I want the 1537, then the 87 Collector's, then the...

I guess I should feel very fortunate. My wife told me her engagement ring didn't cost as much as one of my guitars. She bought it herself for our 10th anniversary and I never had any idea how much she paid for it. Both of our wedding rings together cost $100 and I thought that was too much.

Each instrument is itemized just like the jewelry. We are currently reevaluating our coverage and checking out specialty companies. I'll report what we come up with. I'd like to hear what others have done.

I assumed that an old member wouldn't be trying to sell my guitars. He or she would keep them. Back OT: Jewelry, furs, precious stones, guns, silverware and a few other items typically have special limits for theft losses. They also have special (i.e. low) limits for personal property outside the home, which might be a concern if you are travelling with an expensive guitar. The standard policies I've seen don't have any special limits for musical instruments in the home. Check with your agent. To paraphrase Al, I'm not an insurance agent, just an idiot who practices law for a living.

I also have a high end sound system in excess of 50K and was told no special coverage was needed as long as I had proof of ownership and value. Screw the clothes and the furniture as long as my guitars and sound system is covered.

The reason I asked is a friend of mine was just reminded by his company that they only cover $5k worth of computer equipment, so he upped his coverage for a fairly inconsequential additional yearly fee. Just got me thinking about what might be considered an exception in my household. Fortunately/unfortunately, I think neither my guitar collection nor my computer collection would raise any eyebrows.

Probably wouldn't hurt to also have an additional copy on CD (with pics) put in a fire proof safe as Todd mentioned.
