Eric Johnson playing "Cliffs of Dover" was absolutely brilliant!

I think Michael Monarch's DON'T STEP ON THE GRASS SAM solo on Steppenwolf Live from 1970 should be on that list.

I would agree with Hotel too, but Paige? Pluueezzee. I think he's got to be the most overated player ever.

Very hard to beat. But just remember how long ago that was.......
(See average age poll....)

I notice we are the same age Tim. My earlier years were marked by their devotion to excess, but I stayed banjo-free ;)
On reflection I would have been better off buying a banjo and staying excess-free. :D

I know it is probably my age but lots of notes and the difficulty of play to me have nothing to do with good music. Your mentioning of Neil Young. He is probably not the best lead guitarist but the music he creates with it is memorable and awesome. Just can't relate to EVH though I admit he is a awesome player. Give me Neils one note solo on Cinnamon Girl.

I have to agree about Jimmy Page. I think he is a good producer, writer, visionary and although one of my favorite guitarists, still over-rated.

Of these tunes we're chatting about, I think a few don't belong on the list at all. First, there aren't ANY solo's listed although I know that term is mis-used all the time. We are mostly referring to leads, not solos. Also, tunes like Hotel California and Freebird (unless you are referring to the slide part at the begining) are not even single artist leads.

From a poll way back, Larry Carlton's solo on "Green Earing" has been voted the best.

I'm pretty sure Eliot Randall played on Green Earing, Larry Carlton's big Steely Dan solo was Kid Charlemane

Back in the days of $2 Midnight movies, I saw a film of the Jimi Hendrix; Isle of Wight concert. Now that was a solo. It was two-hours of Jimi, and three different guitars, on stage. Solo. I don't know if I could sit through that now. But Friday Midnight, with my mind in the right state, It was Good.

I'll second Schroeder's nod to the Skunk. Baxter has many memorable solos. I'm also a huge Carlton fan as well and, though many look down on the blues, a few SRV solos still give me chills.

Ok, I'll admit I posted before reading the list. Kurt Cobain? Keef? FOGERTY?

Stop already...who's 101? Britney?

She didn't make it on to the list. Turns out she lost her G string on the way to the audition.

I've been working up some material for an upcoming show where I need to play leads in the style of BB King. The guy is amazing...has anyone ever wrung more music out of a single note?

But the Top 100 list has him at #33 for "The Thrill is Gone". Good song, but his lead on "I've Always Been Lonely" is far better and more demonstrative of his style and genius.

Steve Howe is #68. Should be #1 in my book. But this is really stupid. Like rating the 100 greatest sunsets. Call me old, but about 1/3 of these guys I've never heard of. Dave

You're old, Dave, but I haven't heard of half of them. I had heard of Dimebag Darrel, somehow. Must have been from those kids at Guitar Center that I thought were just trying to see who could make the worst noise on a guitar.
