If I was looking for occasional use of a baritone-strung guitar (i.e. losing the top string and adding a thicker one on the bottom end), can I simply string an existing guitar (the theory being maybe a Deacon or Breadwinner) that way?
Wasn't sure whether the different tensions etc would stuff the neck, and whether it's a better idea to pick up a relatively inexpensive guitar designed for the purpose.
Cheers, dudes.

Location: Scotland | Matt Smith does the baritone thing on a standard scale length acoustic by losing the first string of a medium guage set and using a 0.070 for the 6th string. No reason why you couldn't do something similar on a solidbody. You wont do any damage to the neck, though you may need to tweak the neck rod. The cheapo Danelectro baritones are pretty good for the money, and the longer scale helps with big strings and low tension. |

I'll be string shopping tomorrow, so I'll see what happens.

| Right..., like you can buy baritone guitar strings on the Isle of Man. It's just heavy duty fishing line and you know it. You don't fool me. |

Fishing line is used for standard tuning over here. We use fence wire for the thicker baritone bottom string...

Location: Berkeley, CA | I strung one of my acoustics that way for a while. It worked alright, but trying to get a really low note (even with a .070 or similar) out of a shorter scale length was ultimately unsatisfying.
So then I bought an "inexpensive" baritone.
Then I bought a less inexpensive baritone.
Then another... |
