Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8307 Location: Tennessee | My son Dane, a Marine, got leave over the holidays and was able to spend a little over a week at home. He brought a couple of new songs in his head and we spent some time laying down some tracks. One song in particular knocked me out, so I mixed it down and posted it up on an mp3 site. The song is called The Hardest Things and you can find it here: www.mp3.com/stonebobbo1 Dane plays the acoustic guitar (we miked my Martin, sorry), the electric guitar (Hamer Newport), and the bass. Of course, the vocals are his. I did the percussion, and since he spaced on some lyrics (**) I also laid an electric lead (Hamer Mirage) to fill in. It turned out pretty OK. He did a tour in the Anbar province of Iraq and saw some intense combat action. He had his guitar with him; it took a mortar round (better the guitar than him!) but it survived with only a small hole. He played that guitar a lot during downtime and it was a great comfort to him and his comrades-in-arms and helped get them through some very hairy times. War is hell but you do what you've got to do. We're hoping he can get back home for a few days before he goes back over again, and we can retrack the vocals and finish up another couple of songs he started on. Thanks for humoring me. ** The missing lyrics -- "And you might not be so high and mighty if for just one day I traded places with you".

He said he was headed off to Iraq in the next few days. I gave him the part no charge, shook his hand and told him to, "Go over there, kick some ass, and come home safe". Let me please express those same thoughts to your son stonebobbo.

We can all agree that we want the combatants on the ground to get home safe to their families, I hope, and leave it at that. It's all about the music and the guitars here, eh? (okay, maybe a little conflict around banjos and Taylors....)

How interesting to have the musical connection with you son. I had a good relationship, in later life, with my Dad and all was good for many years but to share the music would have been pretty cool indeed. Enjoy it all man. Randy

I guess I need to move next to walter becker and have him show me the changes to the aja lp so I can one up Bob and his talented family. I still hate him.

Regardless of where any of our own political views stand, the soldiers and Marines over there ...who are the combat troops ... know the job needs to get done and are committed to getting it over as quickly as possible. There are lots more songs in various stages of production ... Dane is very talented in many ways. The tattoos you see in the pic are all his own original art. Al, yes ... '64 Riviera. It's a nice ride with a strong motor and straight body (original California car). He dropped the tail a couple of inches, got the interior kit in it and now it's ready to get sprayed in a pearlecent black cherry. Before going into the Marines, Dane got his degree in Custom Hot Rod building (yes, they give degrees in that!). It is currently parked in my garage, and it would be a shame if I didn't take it out, low and slow, a couple of times a week. ;)
