My son picked up a video IPod today using Christmas and Birthday money. Is anyone aware of software that will let him load DVDs onto his IPod short of purchasing them from ITunes? We have a large library of DVDs that he would like to access during our frquent roadtrips.

iPod uses MPEG-4 video format. I'm not sure about DVD movies, but I have successfully converted ASF, AVI, MPEG, and QuickTime videos to MPEG-4, and then load it into the iPod.

Do a google search about ipod video converters. I seem to be having better success with the Videora converter. Just an FYI: depending on the size of the video, the conversion process takes time -- measured usually in hours.

Good luck.

I use PQ DVD to iPod Video Converter Suite, $39.95
web page

Easy to use, patch converts .avi's in a snap, DVD's take about 45 minutes and about 5 to load onto the ipod using itunes. The average 4.7GB DVD crunches down to about 400MB using PQ DVD.

I tried the freeby one's around the net but they always had some kind of issue with audio compatibility or something else.

You'll find it doesn't take long to fill the ipod up... :)

The latest Roxio Popcorn - but I'm not sure if they have a PC version or how you'll get on with encrypted DVDs.

I have a Mac and use MacTheRipper to rip the DVD and get rid of the encryption, then use Popcorn to burn a DVD or convert to iPod or even your mobile phone.

Disclaimer - only 'rip' DVDs that you legally own. (Yeah, right.) ;) ;)

is place for people who are as enamored with iPods as the folks here are with Ovations

Plenty of iPod Tutorials/Advice - I'd be very surprised if you can't find many solutions there.
