Hey, all. Been out of touch for awhile, working on developing my business and dealing with some extended family health issues. The past seven months have been, well... fun is not the word I would use.

Anyway, a question for the OFC masses: When I dampen chords on my 1598, I get an extra ringing tone that sounds off as the chord I dampened dies out. The swifter the dampening, the louder the extra tone. I finally figured out what it was... it's the same sound you get if you strum your fingers over the open strings above the nut. While I'm pretty sure this has to do with harmonic vibration, I'm 100% sure that it's annoying.

Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, how do you stop it from happening? I thought of tying a bandana over the strings above the nut, but not only do I not like the look, I want to solve the problem, not apply a band-aid.

Any help / suggestions would be appreciated!

Never come across the problem - tho from your description I would think the nut would be the prime suspect. Somebody will know.
Welcome back.

The quickest and easiest solution would be "stop doing that."

:p

But, I'm with Herr Schroeder and suspect a nut issue.

weave a piece of cloth through the strings behind the nut, see if that helps it.

I had a similar problem on my SMT and it turned out to be the contact springs on the battery box (Optima pre) I had a Folklore in the 70's that had a similar ring and it was the switching mechanism on the output jack, a blob of blu-tac cured it. My Book mando had an annoying rattle which I realised was only when it was on a strap. The culprit was the Dunlop locking mechanism. It's not always the obvious.

Paul, Do you hire out for consultations? There's this ringing here and we suspect it's from the construction across the street but just can't be positive.

Right. I'll look into that. The clue is the missing bits?

I had a ring caused by the battery box in a non-O as well. And Paul is correct, these noises are not always obvious.

That, plus the ringing is accompanied by cries of "Unclean! Unclean!"

Just cut all the strings above the nut.

Or beat the b*****d with a ball & peen hammer 'till the ringing stops.

.....though the judge said I wasn't to do that after release. But you're probably okay...so far.

I find it helpful that my Tinitus is darn close to an "A 440".
