this problem is making me crazy.

I have a brother mfc 8500 printer/fax/scanner

It has been working fine for a long time (a year maybe)

now it will not work. I have it connected by usb I also have a zebra thermal printer 2844 connnected by lpt1

so I dumped the drivers and the software reloaded re booted etc etc etc.

finally got the printer to be recognized but when I send somethnig to get printed it comes up with an error.
this document has failed to print. etc etc.

I tried every usb port changed the cable rebooted a bunch of times looked into devive manager and cleaned up any question marks. there is also a unknown device connected which I assume is the printer but can't seem to get that driver to resolve.

any clues? e me

I had a very simular problem with my minolta laserprinter, it ended up being caused by an auto update in windows. Ended up buying a new computer and a new printer, then it did the same thing all over again, (Minolta tech support held my hand the whole way, they were great to deal with). My problem basically arose when windows went into sleep mode, it would not properly reconnect with the printer when it wakes up. Now I have to reboot the system anytime I want to print. I'm convinced it is a windows problem.

You have a driver issue. USB's are hard, brother printers are terrible. It's hard work to clean it up, but it can be done.

LEGAL: don't blame me.

1. remove your printer driver thru the control panel.
2. unplug your usb cable to the printer.
3. remove all occurrences of "Brother" printer related items in your registry. This is the part that could really fry your OS. If you don't know what you are doing, you may have to reinstall your OS.
4. Go into the control panel, then system, then device manager. Remove all USB roots/hubs/devices.
5. Use Windows Explorer and delete any subdirectories related to Brother Printers. (C:\Program Files\Brother is a common one.) If you know what driver your printer was using, delete that file from \Windows\system32.
6. Reboot.
7. After reboot, your computer should find the USB hubs again. Do not plug in the printer.
8. Start the install program from the printer. Use the original install CD. It should tell you when to plug in the printer and turn it on.

If that doesn't work... ??? This usually works for my two brother printers.

Al did you try to download an updated driver?
You can also use tten's procedure to remove the old driver references and try an updated driver.

if you recently updated IE to IE7 that will certainly create some problems. i was experiencing several issues all at once after the IE7 update. got rid of IE7 and my troubles at the same time.

I have a brother mfc 9700 that does everything. I bought it at a time when multi-function printers were just beginning to get into the market. It has served me well for over four years, and I haven't had any issues with it. *knock on wood as I hope it stays this way indefinitely*

I don't use the USB. I prefer the printer to be connected the old fashioned way, using printer cable. My PC runs on WinXP, and since it's been upgraded with the Service Pack 2, I didn't even need to install the driver as the computer just did it for me automatically.

I do get the "document failed to print" error messages, every now and then, and it is largely due to the fact that I either a) forget to turn it on, or b) turn it on within minutes before I print a document. I usually restart the computer, and the printer automatically prints the document, once the desktop becomes visible on the monitor.

Al, you can download the drivers and utilities here. Note that also on this page is a link to download an uninstall tool.

There's pretty good instructions on this page for removing the old drivers and reinstalling.
And yes, IE7 has screwed up a bunch of stuff. And Vista is even worse.
Deinstalling and reinstalling the drivers after the IE7 update may very well solve your problem.

I had a problem too. But solved it by running the printer thru its parrallel port. A friend of my wife's set it up so that our four computers could be plugged into the router, and then one of the computers is designated as the primary computer, and the parrallel (or is it the printer cable) comes out of there. Anyway, it's not usb.

Al. Take a deep breath. Let it out slowly.

Now, did you try this?
Download the drivers and utilities here.
Download the uninstall tool on the same page.
Follow the directions.

Report back on your success.

al,
to undo the IE7 update just go to Add/Remove Programs and scroll down to the update and delete it. worked for me and it took the computer back to IE6 automatically. seems the update is not all that compatible with current software/hardware. i've heard and read alot of horror stories about this.

another option, if you are running XP, is to simply perform a System Restore back to a time when all was working.
