You mean the String Tubes that Dave sold me don't work? Now that you mention it, I really didn't notice much of an improvement in sound with them installed, but I thought that it must have just been my untrained ear. Now the sound reflective bowl paint is completely different story ...

robbie,
perhaps string tubes and the emperor's new clothes have something in common.

Let's see:

1) they're so clear only an idiot can't "see" them.

2) you're not supposed to leave them on.

Yup, they got some things in common. :D :p :D :p

It's a good thing that this question's been asked. I'd been hearing about it for a very long time, and have read almost every joke written about it, but I never had the b***s to ask it. Based on what I read on this thread, so far, there really is no definite answer. I think I'm better off keeping it that way. :D

Yes string tubes exist and here they are!

And excerpt from a page talking about SRV's gear:

Finally, he slides a 5/8"-long piece of plastic tubing (insulation from electrical wire) over each string to protect it from the metal "break points." He uses the heaviest piece of tubing he can get that still fits down the tremolo/block hole. Even with this, the high strings still cut through the plastic quickly (sometimes in one set), and when they do, the strings break ...

I wish I had ordered a set of XL string tubes because I could have used them when I was restringing the mandocello today. Those .074 strings really hog out the wood. It took about another 15 minutes with the string brush to get the sawdust out.

yes tim, but OTOH, you would not have to fear losing your balladeer to a flood.

in fact, since the WRB probably does not float, (per crimsonlake) perhaps we could use these devices on it.

Actually - I think part of the packing that the WRB came in was actually a used string tube (i.e. flotation device). That does explain alot!
