I have suffered for many years with hearing loss and have about 50% left in both ears. Too many large diesel gensets, shotguns and Lotus 7 exhausts have done the damage. There may be a number of people out there who suffer the same.

I was eventually persuaded to spend some money, in fact $2850 which is not cheap for a couple of chips and I bought myself two Digital Hearing Aids (Phonak) and they have they changed my life. I always thought my 1778LX sounded very basey, but with aids in, I can now hears all the highs and lows. What a difference it has made to hearing all my guitars, as they all now sound fantastic.

The Phonak model I have has an automatic noise cancelling system (great for bum notes)and a music setting, plus another setting for noisy enviroments.

I had them in, at my bands last practise and they were great. They did not overload in a practise enviroment, but will try them on stage later next month.

All I can say is that I would really recomend this to anyone who has a bad hearing problem. More importantly, I can now hear what my friends and business partners are saying, without asking everyone to repeat what they said and it has been the best thing I have bought in many years.

A routine cleaning also works wonders, particularly for any treble sound.

Any problems I have with hearing at this time are not capable of being solved by modern medicine.

I suffer from Hearing AIDs, caused by listening to too many king A******s!

Is n`t that a kind of cramp in the eardrum muscle( do n`t know the medical/tech.term).. some years ago I suffered from cramps in my legs,a friend advised me to try QUININE ,spoke to my doctor about it ,who thought it was worth a try,Well, after using it for several months, the cramps went away and have n`t been back since,So..maybe U could talk to your Doc.about it :)

The ringing in the ears could be(check my spelling here) tinitis. Look it up. If you don't wear earplugs when you play, it could rob you of your hearing.
Isn't it funny how I used to look sideways at the guys who wore earplugs and now I can't do final mix without checking with a guy like that?
Listener fatigue sets in faster every year and I find my mixes having too much bass.

"Do they help with ringing in the ears?"

No, try answering the darn phone !!! :)

Sorry couldn't resist.

My hearing is a little odd. I lost a section of hearing just above the "normal" range. Not sure how other than maybe some bad experiences with feedback and shooting when I was young, but more likely just a birth defect. As that area is where a lot of hiss and noise occurs, it's been interesting. The result is actually that I hear things that I wouldn't normally because the part of my hearing that's missing would have covered it up. Things like dog whistles, the whine of older style tv's and computer monitors, motion detectors like they have over cash registers in stores, light dimmers. Hard to describe, because I don't hear them like "tones" exactly, but I definately hear them. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm being affected. I'll get a headache or just feel yuckie and realize I'm near a light dimmer.

It was such a relief in my studio when I got LCD monitors. When I was using CRT's after a few hours in the studio, which was extremely quiet, I'd turn off the monitor and the only similar way to describe the relief was like when your ears are blocked on an airplane, you swallow or whatever to clear them, and all of a sudden you can hear again. That's what it was like when I would turn off the computer monitor.

It's never really affected my music or mixing as my normal range is still fairly intact. I might hear things a little clearer than some.
