Location: New South Wales, Australia | Up until I joined the OFC a couple of months ago I had no idea that Ovation made electric guitars.(please excuse my ignorance)
Anyway, I've recently started playing in a garage band where my weapon of choice is my ssb 1860. I told my bass player that one day I was going to buy an electric guitar and he says to me.."I've got one here that you can borrow"
Lo and behold he pulls this Celebrity Ovation from out of an old cupboard and tells me that he bought it a couple of years ago in a pawn shop.
He's a drummer/bass player and has never played it and also had limited knowledge of the Ovation name.
I accepted it gratefully but as I've been an acoustic player for all these years I know nothing about electric guitars. It seems to be in reasonable condition and sounds ok.
I realise my photography is rather sub standard but is there anyone out there who could tell me anything about these things. I've found a serial number but don't know the model. It has XK-110 pickups which means nothing to me. |

Location: Sunshine State, Australia | Hey Oz. Scary parallel universe thing happening here. I was looking through your new photos and I thought that I had the only Watson in existence. A few months ago I searched the web ad nauseum, but didn't find ANY info. Yours looks exactly like mine - black, and the same dumb white bird on the scratchplate as well. I've never seen another one til tonight. Mines covered in scratches and the ornitological scratchplate is held on by willpower alone. I haven't treated it with much respect. It's my 'basher' guitar, and I bash it regularly. Unlike my Elite, which is worshipped.
And... I've got glow in the dark stickers on my Hondo too, courtesey of my little girl.
Oz, email me any photos you need to 'reduce' and I'll fix em in PhotoShop and email em back at ya. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | Yep, GTX-33. My only theory on why some say "Celebrity by Ovation" and others have the GTX-33 or 32 or 22 etc... is they are the same neck and it must have been an extra and pointless (excuse the pun) hassle and expense to make sure the right label end up on the right guitar. So maybe they just decided to have the neck labeled "Celebrity by Ovation" and not worry about putting the model on it.
This is not confirmed, but it's the only thing I can think of that makes any sence. |

[Oh, nice guitar.] But maybe you can learn something from that listing. I have thought about bidding on a krackle-finish version of one of them before, but I got two electrics, and I play my acoustic/electrics much more.

Now that you've got me thinking about these things, I am seeing some affordable GTX's. And now I'm thinking about them again.

BTW, great kids and guitar photos! G'day Designzilla, and thanks for your comments. I only got the guitar yesterday so have only spent 30 minutes or so playing it. It needs new strings before I go any further but to my ear it sounds pretty good. There seems to be a problem with the pickup selector switch in one position but apart from that everything else is fine. I'm gonna give it a workout today. |

Location: New South Wales, Australia | Thanks Arthur...I feel much better now. That lightning design is a bit too flashy for me these days.
I fooled around with mine a bit today and it sounds OK but it won't stay in tune. Dunno if it's the tuners or something to do with the whammy bar.
I don't have much experience playing electric guitar and I've discovered that my "technique" of resting my right hand on the bridge of an acoustic guitar ain't gonna cut it with the electric variety.
I use the term "technique" very loosely....it's more an old bad habit than a technique lol.
I hope your constant thoughts about GTX's don't lead you into any sort of temptation that could get you in trouble....you can blame me I suppose as I'm a long way away :) |

Electric Technique? I ain't got one. I still gotta get that string muting thing down. Way too much sustain with overdrive. I can rest my hand on the bridge of my SG-styled guitar. But not the Strat. Don't know about that GTX. And I switch back and forth between the O's and the electrics. (whichever one I grab outta the stand) I basically play folk-metal-protest stuff, mostly chords. And the electrics are more useful for lead stuff.
I was thinking of that Puke-green GTX, but I bet it goes over $100, and I already got two electrics. Just not O's. |
