OK, guys...I got a call on my cell phone yesterday from my brother who first statement was," The eagle has landed!"

That's right, my 1685 arrived safely yesterday up in Utah where I will be going to visit him next week. A bunch of us hawaiians are getting together to play at my sister in laws party and I can't wait to strum my new baby!

Then it will be time to bring her back home to warm Hawaii after the weekend.

Here's my question for you experienced travelers. Do you usually check in the guitar in the hard case before the flight, or do you try and carry it on the airplane and hope they can store it in the plane?

If checked in I assume they will handle it with care???? The OHSC should suffice in terms of protection, right?

Do a search on this from about a year ago. We had quite an extended discussion. There was even some letter I found that said guitars could be carried on the plane. I took one down and back to Phoenix. Southwest had told us that I had to check it, so I packed it in an Ovation box, but when I got there, they said with the box it was oversize and would cost $60 extra. Then she asked why I didn't just carry it on. The first flight was to Las Vegas and every other person had a guitar.
I tried to get on fairly early and put it with the head first toward the back. That way there was room to pack stuff around it.
If I tried again, I would pack some extra foam around the neck and on top, so that if I had to check it, it wouldn't get broken in the case.

It's all over the place.
1. try to carry it on
2. when that doesn't work, gate check it
3. when that's out check as baggage and hope for the best
4. drive
5. Remember, on most airlines you buy a ticket, on Delta you only buy a chance.

cwk,

1. My first option for sure
2. gate check should be a bit better I think
3. hope it doesn't get to this point
4. Can't drive back to Hawaii from Utah...mmm...how's swimming?
5. DAMNIT!!!! I'm flying on Delta...

Are you serious about the Delta comment? Anyone have good experiences flying on Delta recently?

Not really serious, it could be any airline. I used to fuel them all, remember, so we'd dump on whoever wasn't paying their bill on time.

4. How about a boat?

Last time I was on a plane it was for the NAMM show, Jan 06. I'll take my Suburban if I need to go somewhere.

aloha clarke,
in my experience, prior to 911, the flight attendants would allow me to store my guitar in the first class section of the plane and i would retrieve it on the way out. (i've never flown first class!) there is usually more storage space available up there. it would be worth a try.

We flew Delta to Spain and back. It was the first time our family ever flew anywhere without a delay, mechanical problem or lost luggage on any airline. We like Delta.
