I recently bought a Celebrity GC 057 and am liking it a lot. I've had guitars around for 40 years and played them on and off. I wanted to get something light, easy to play, and comfortable to hold--my shoulder gets cranky reaching around a dreadnought. I'm thinking the 057 fills the bill nicely.

I'd like to put on some strings that maximize the easy-to-play part, because frankly, I need all the help I can get. My left hand's fingers don't seem to have a lot of aptitude for guitar, but I can't afford a new hand.

I've been thinking about extra-lights, 80/20 bronze, silk and steels...of course I want them to sound great also! I bet there's a lot on this forum about strings, but that's my newbie question.

Thanks

Thank you. I have a set of EJ15s that I'll put on next. I'll remember the EJ16s if they sound too wimpy.

Can I post in other areas now? I promise not to ask about strings.

+1 on that. But I use them because I prefer the sound I get from them. (and Welcome)

Definitely going to try some silk and steels, I've got a set of the Martins on a bit of a backorder from Musician's Friend. No rush, I'm still not comfortable with whipping strings off and on every couple of days. The Ovation bridge sure makes it a lot easier, though.

I've been wondering about the lower tension of silk and steels--from what I can tell the b and high e are pretty much the same as other steel string sets, so those 2 probably don't really have lower tension, right? Does it do anything weird to the neck to have reduced tension in the bass and mid part but relatively higher tension on the treble? It's those little devils that tend to carve into my fingers.

The D'Addario EJ15s (extra-lights) I just put on don't seem to play a lot different from regular lights, I don't notice much sound difference either, maybe a little thinner.

I'd like to follow the instructions to continue posts in other areas, but I find I can't post in them as yet. Maybe a FAQ on "how long will it be after my first post until I can post in other areas, and/or when should I take the hint and just shut up?"

May I suggest a treat for you and your guitar...

Thomastik-Infeld Plectrum strings. They're lower tension than regular strings, but they sound and feel way better than Silk and Steels. Thomastik strings are a bit expensive, but you should give them a try just once. Then again. Then...

Thanks. That's a new one on me, and it sounds really interesting. I'll give 'em a try.

You may want to try the new Eric Clapton model of strings. I use to use dadairo strings but I bought one pack of these to try and I have switched all my ovations to them. I even used 10's in 12 string and only used the small 6 of the strings on one ovation elite so I could get the nashville sound on some of my music. These strings boom!

John Pearce Silk/Beronze or GHS silk/bronze are very nice strings. I have also used the Martin SS on my 12 string and like them a lot.
