Location: Chicago | Does anyone have wisdom about getting the perfect Ovation sound in home recording? We have a digital rig and a mic (AKG) but never mixed the two. How is this done? Line in alone can be a bit sterile. Mic alone is very woody and "unplugged".... How do the pros do it? For example, I am amazed by the beauty of DiMeola's tone on "Rite of Strings" and "World Sinfonia".... |

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I've got a tascam 4 track 2 channel casette recorder. I suppose you could mic one channel and plug-in for the other. It would fun if you added compression to one channel, and than added high end equalization for the other. My tascam is more of an idea gatherer, or studio prep, than a studio recorder. It works for my needs though.
Or just plain plug in and use an aphex exciter, which functions, to my ear, as compressing the bottom end and than filling in details in the upper end.
The combinations are endless. |

Location: Chicago | Thanks fellas. Rick, I don't know exactly what rig my buddy (Jeff Burns) has, but it's a one channel, unfortunately. We are thinking of getting a mixer and trying to do exactly what you suggest.
What's an "aphex exciter"? |

Actually.first of all,invest in a good digital mixer-recorder,a decent (inepensive say 60-70 usd)condensor mic,two would be better,a couple of cables,couple of stands,and you are in business,well,that is,there`s a lot to learn,here`s a good place to start...

Look Gregg,honestly,if you are considering recording on a "serious basis", and I gather that you are,than I would say....
Study the Subject First,that Site ( KevinKemp) is a Good one to start with,otherwise,you might be spending tons o`money,many of those Digital Wonders have Built In Effects,that are rather Good,if you buy stomps/pedals now,only to find out later that your mixer/recorder already has them ...!!..but regarding the EXITER,well it is a combination of sorts(compressor/limiter),APHEX is just one of the companies who make those,but again,many of those Digital mic./rec. machines have that "built in"..of course,you can allways buy "better" ..read ,"mucho dineros"....MUCHO !!....look at that Site first,..it Will give you an Idea of what you really may want to Have/Need/Use...
..and I really would like to play with you,but allow me to become a Virtuoso first.. :)

Location: Chicago | Dig the Marshall, right? The club we've played this year (Sotto Jazz at La Piazza) has nice equipment, including a Godin nylon, keys, and that amp. If you look closely at some of the photos on www.guitarsoffire.com you will see that we are playing through our Bose L1: another thing we found on THIS site, checked out, bought and really like. |

Location: Scotland | Check out the new version of the L1. Saw it at Frankfurt. Power Stand is smaller and lighter and now has an outboard mixer/effects processor, with reverbs, parametics, Bose presets etc. The outboard is compatible with the earlier L1 |

I can't remember how it works with electrics, I assume you'd have to color your sound with a pedal or maybe a line PODxt. I've found the PODxt to give a very acceptable model for electric amps, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. |

Location: Scotland | The way to go with the L1 and electric guitars is to use a high-quality low-powered amp and mike it. I use a little 20watt Class A tube amp and a Hughes & Kettner Redbox speaker compensated DI. Or as Rick figured, you could use a modeller. The L1 has presets for the POD.
While I'm out for the tour I'm going to pick up one of the new Boss Fender amp modellers and see how that works with the L1. They do 2 models a 65 Blackface deluxe and a tweed Bassman. |
