Location: boston | wondering if anyone can help me id a nice ovation acoustic that i just bought...i've been away from guitars for approx 30 years and thought that this particular guitar sounded great. the store owner sold it as an "american ovation". sadly, the previous owner blacked out the label with serial number. i was hoping somebody could help me id this nice old guitar. it's black with "west german" tuning heads.

Location: boston | sorry, i was unable to load images...the guitar is all black with what appears to be a shallow bowl. the headstock is all black. it does resemble the applause model, but it does say "ovation." the neck is very heavy...i assumed that since the tuners said west germany on them, then the guitar was probably before the berlin wall fell...thanks anyway... |

Location: Tennessee | There's lots of different models you could have just based on the tuners. Is there a small label with a six digit number on it inside the bowl closer to the neck then the big label? Second, can you describe the inlays on the fretboard? Lastly, can you take a wooden ruler and measure inside the hole from the bowl to the top? That info will help folks here make closer guesses.
Glad you're back playing. It's never to late. Your ears don't lie and you probably have a great US guitar with the K-bar neck. |

Location: boston | thanks for the help on this...i just measured from the bowl to the top...3 1/2 inches deep. also the inlays are, i believe mother of pearl dots. the guitar is a cutway model. it has a preamp with one dial that says "fet 3" and a bass midi and treble adustors. and yes, there is a small, rectangular label above the oval label. there is no neck adjust nut on the head. it is quite a unique guitar...my last guitar was an hd 28 martin which i let go for a car transmission back in 1980...i think i have a winner here....thanks again!!!! |

| If it IS an 1861 (no guarantee, but that's the likeliest model), then given the FET-3 pre-amp and the lack of a stamped serial # on the back of the headstock, it probably dates from the mid 1980's. Sorry, without the serial number, you can't date it much closer than that. Retailed for ~$800 then, that's about the best you could expect to sell a mint condition one with original case today. |

Location: Tennessee | What g8r said. It could also be a 4861 model, which is basically the same as the 1861 but came later in the 80's. |
