(Ovation 1778 LX)

I took a look through the rear cover and saw that the bracing on one side of the soundboard was not flush with the soundboard, whereas the other bracing on the other side was indeed flush with the soundboard.

Is this normal? There is no crack or instability in the bracing, and it's hard for me to believe that changes in humidity could be responsible for this degree of "warping" if you could call it that. I have maintained humidity levels pretty well, and so this is just very strange. Is this bracing supposed to be glued to the board? The other side looks good.

looks like a glue failure. Should be no separation where you have the weird line arrow.

Should I send it to the factory for repairs? Is this kind of thing covered by the warranty?

On closer inspection, there doesn't appear to be any glue residue anywhere near the arching portion, but there is a lot of glue where it meets the soundboard, as if the arching portion of the brace didn't get any glue in the first place.

Strange.

I'm not a Luthier, but that looks... (what's the technical term?) Yucky!!
I only have used O's, but if I was the original owner, I would definitely send that sucker back.
I would think that they would be happy to repair/replace it.
It's their reputation at stake.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

Do I go about contacting the factory directly or should I go through the ordinary warranty channels (through Guitar Center and then to the factory)?

I will be playing for other people on March 26th and then on April 6th (Good Friday), and since the sound isn't too greatly affected (heck, I've probably been playing with this defect the whole time!), I'll send it in in a few weeks anyways.

Call Kim Keller at the factory (do a search for the number). He will make things right.

You know, I don't think I've ever sat and studied the inside of any of my guitars. Must be a character flaw.

I forwarded this thread to Kim about 4 hours ago. He'll see it in the morning. You should contact him mid to late morning and see what he says.

I'll bet this kind of link to the company isn't available with other guitar brands!

John and Kim are what "their"(meaning the other guys) customer service reps/techs should aspire to be.

Kim got back to me today after I sent the guitar a few weeks ago, and he says they're replacing the top. Sounds fairly intense.

I was lovin' the epaulets and the overall paint pattern from the other top top, so I'm hoping the news one turns out just as pretty.

I'll let you guys know when it comes back!

I was hoping to get a lot of studying done this Thanksgiving break (I'm a med student), only to find that my guitar was finished and arrived at my house after almost 3 months MIA! (P.S. I wasn't expecting the COD payment, but I had no previous experience with the warranty process.)

And what a beauty this is! Kim and the fellows over in CT really know what they are doing and how to surprise me with their level of detail and depth of quality. They captured the tones of finish from the old top, and they added some great epaulets (they look shinier than before). They even glossed the neck a bit and made the frets nicer than before.

Of course, it sounds as a brand-new top, so I'll need to play a bit to get back to the level I'm used to from this guitar. One thing I noticed right away is that I can hear the bass notes... they seemed to disappear as my old top was practically missing one of the braces.

I like the finish on the top. I wonder if an Adamas top can be made in that color, less the gloss..

Can anyone tell me what model case that is? I'm giving up on my 9158...I treat it pretty well and at 5 years old it's got lots of cracks.

I want THAT case. John <>{
