Personally, I would never subject ANY guitar to that kind of string tension. It's guitar masochism in the first degree!! If you're going to do it, at least tune it down a couple of frets. I know Ovation 12s are built to take concert string tension, but I still wouldn't want to subject the top and bridge to that much pull. Better safe than a Mother Ship trip. JMO, of course.

Structurally, I think it could take it, but you see the top pull up behind the bridge. The sound increase wasn't worth seeing that. Stay with lights.

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 1374 | just was wondering.. I will definitely defer to you all... and most assuredly don't want an explosive failure/decompression.. I think it has meds or specials on now.. the left hand is ok... been lefty all my life and play right handed.. all the others are now strung med to heavy.. but I guess paired 13s and up would be kinda tough. Thanks guys... not even gonna attempt it. Glenn

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 1374 | old post, I got over it... switching from the A's and O's to the electrics which are strung with 9s or 10s and verrry low... the kung-fu grip has been given up. I do have a couple of sets of extra-light electric 8s for the UK-XII when it's finished.. but it's gonna be a unique gittercritter, and at this point the 8s are for experimentation... the Bluebird 12 neck has some VERY low profile nickel-silver frets on it.. guess that's the way Glen liked em.. If I want a workout I'll go over to GC and play something set-up poorly  lights are on it right now.. but have played through the sheathing.. so will be trying the med lights this go round.. thanks, Glenn

Their 12-string light set (10-47) results in a tension of 115 kg and the 12-string medium (12-52) of 146 kg. That's about 30% more. I would assume a 13-56 set to have about 50% more string tension compared to the light set. I won't give a try. Karl
