Now that the Deep Contour bowl has made it through all the models (at least on the LX side), how about bringing back the Balladeer acoustic and making it a Deep Contour? A 2011LX perhaps? As owner of one of the few acoustic only Ovations (the CC01), I may be a bit biased, but I don't see why Ovation limits itself to only acoustic-electrics. They can have at least just one USA acoustic. I just think it's nice sometimes to have a straight acoustic without the pre-amp.

you can custom order it without a pre amp I doubt that it would be a problem.

as for acoustic only guitars I have a pile of acoustic only Adamas guitars. some bought them and installed pickups. the rest are still with me.

I am rather sure the general puble is looking for ac/el ovations.

I actually thought about doing that with the Balladeer 1711 (basically a custom order 1111), but aren't the bowls already pre-cut to house the pre-amp? I wouldn't want to custom order a 1711 without a pre-amp if it's just going to have a big hole on the side where the pre-amp is supposed to be, or a hole that's just covered up.

I've ordered several guitars from Al that are normally A/E to be made as acoustic only. The bowls are perfect. Dave

Okay, I'm alittle slow...
Do y'all really think that no electronics make the guitar actually sound/play differently?
I have a pair of Artists, 1621 & 1121, and they do sound and weigh different. But I think I've got EJ16's on one and 15's on the other.
Plus the 1121 doesn't have serial number, so I don't know when it was made. [But they both have Silver Labels] The acoustic-only is alot lighter.

Always looking for that education that I slept through in school

Yes, the straight acoustic sounds different from an A/E version. I think better.

I agree (always safe to agree with Bill).

Only exception that I have found is the Patriot and 1119/1619. The a/e and acoustic appear to be very close...maybe the A bracing, AAA top, the deep bowl and smaller can/battery of the stacked knobs.

There are (to me) three advantages of an acoustic only, assuming duh that you don't play out and don't need electronics.

1) Lighter weight. I castrated two 1537's and three adamas 2-knobbers. The weight savings without the shoe box inside was very noticable. These are great guitars to do this to because you just plug the four holes (2 knobs and 2 jacks) with dummy pots and jacks from radio shack and the guitars still look like 2-knobbers. You can easily reinstall the electronics (which I did) if you ever want to sell them.

2) Unobstructed body cavity. You can't convince me that blocking off part of the sound chamber with a big old black box does anything good to the sound. Ovations early literature extolling the virtues of the roundback claimed that the sound was undisturbed by all that bracing found on conventional guitars. Same would apply to the big electronics box. I think this is one of the reasons the FD14 sounds so damn good. Btw, you'll notice that more and more wood guitar makers like takamine, taylor and martin are putting the bulk of their electronics right up under the fretboard extension where there is not a hell of a lot going on as far as sound propagation (from what I've read).

3) THIS IS THE BIG ONE. The A/E saddle definately hurst the sound in my opinion. You're depending on goo, silica, whatever to help propagate the sound from string to bridge? Give me a solid bone any day (shut up Cliff). A thinline pu or undersaddle is a better compromise, IF installed correctly.

Dave
