Hi.

I recently bought a '91 Elite 1868 Pearl White. I love the guitar.
When i received it nothing was wrong, but a required change of strings, and a heavy tobacco smell..
But since then a small crack i slowly getting bigger. From nothing two months ago to about a half inch now.

The crack sits on the bass side of the bridge, where the bridge ends. A smaller crack has emerged on the other side of the bridge.

Nothing can be seen on the inside and the braces look fine and well in place.
What have I done to this guitar You might ask?: I changed the strings to a set of Martin 10's. And then I followed an advice from these pages to put an envelope with fresh ground coffee inside the guitar for a few days, to get rid of the tobacco smell. I did this in the case. Btw. the guitar is in the case whenever its not being played.

I can't imagine the strings at too heavy. But perhaps the coffee has dried out the guitar wood, and in this way started the crack?

Anyone who has any advice on what this might be or what I can do to prevent it from developing any further? Any help will be appreciated.

Regards
Lars Christensen,
Denmark.

Cracks seem to always be humidity-related it seems.
Do a quick search here on the General Posting pages for humidifier packs (I think that's what they are called)

Hi Michael.
Thank You. I've been searching through the General Posting pages, and will go buy something to keep humidity constant. Just to be sure.
But i don't know if this is the solution.
I've been checking the in- and outdoor humidity for the last month. It's in the range of 50 to 75% indoors, and 50 to 100 outdoors. I live on a small island, so we have a high outdoor humidity.
Generally the humidity indoor is at 65. This is a bit high?

Hi.
I bought the Humidipack. But where would you put the packs for the soundhole in an elite 1868?

They can't hang from the strings. Amd if dropped into the guitar through the guitarback, it will lie loose in the guitar, and/or too close to some of the wood, depending on how the the case is placed.
