Look at it this way HobbyPicker. I have learned 100 times more than I ever knew in the last 5 years since I retired. When I was in the business I never knew a whole song, didn't need to, play a few chords on ours, same chords on theirs and then say "Ours is much better, don't you agree?"
Now it's doing takedowns off cds and writing tunes and singing them every Wednesday at the Mermaid (in the winter). The tune book is a 2" thick binder and is full, I need to get another one.
I guess age doesn't mean that much although I do feel I learn slower now than I did 20 years ago. I just make up for it with attitude and extra work at it time.
The guitar part is the easy one, singing well, now that's hard. |

I feel like I've never played better. Maybe because my playing has never been particularly "athletic". But I do find myself steering my choices toward material that I think will allow be to age gracefully. That means I'm becoming a lot more of a singer and less of a player. It also means I'm directing my song choices into a more comfortable, bluesy area.
Just like no one wants to hear an old guy sing a song of teenage angst, no one wants to hear a teenager sing about the heartbreak of old age. Gotta make it fit. |

Also, maybe it isn't that we don't play as well as we used to, but rather, we just don't hear it as well. |

Location: Wooster, Ohio | 56 here and made my first CD on garageband this month. Having more fun playing now than ever. The software out there is simply amazing. Garageband was a program that has on my apple computer and that I got last Christmas and it took me this long to get going on it, just a hoote. Having a blast editing, adding effects, and making it sound pretty professional. Not dead yet.

Location: ms | I turned five the day JFK was shot so that will make me 49 this month. At about 40 I started having really bad hand trouble. Arthritis kicked in, tendon trouble from years of over use but it was also about that time I turned a corner with my playing. It was like I found my voice but I was scared that my hands would not last long. My hand Doc is also a guitar player really pushed me to adjust when needed and keep playing when i was about to give up. I am better than i was at 40. I live and play with pain but all i do is play and lots of people go to their day jobs in pain. Like Ani Difranco says " music is too important to leave it to pros" so I'll keep on playing with one finger if I have to. |

One of the great things that comes with a few years of life, is confidence. Slipkid is a perfect example of that. He may not be a great player, but he's a good player who plays with confidence (I've seen it develop over the years and it's a wonderful thing). You don't have to be a great player if you know your tune, feel good about it and can execute what you are trying to do.
I've seen a lot of pros who follow that formula and are huge successes.... |

After all, they are guaranteed return postage paid. Oh yeah, first I fill them with as many wheel weights as I can stuff in the envelope & tape 'em shut. Location: Chicago | I can share what is sort of a miracle in my case: My guitar playing was dead for a good fifteen years. There were entire years that I did not pick up the Legend. In March of '06 I got frustrated and wrote an appeal on this forum. That's how I got together with Jeff B. (tenfootfingerz). I find that, at nearly 50, I can "dust off" old chops but NEW tricks are very hard to learn indeed. Special trouble for me lies in "cleaning up" the playing, making things clear and articulated. I've gotta say, though, there is nuthin' like just playing stuff you love with a comrade and getting off yer ass and gigging once in a while. No, my wife and kids don't like it much, but, it's therapy!!! |
