New guy on the AGF trying to decide on either a Martin D-16GT at $600 or an Ovation Balladeer at $400.

I'm sure there are those here with an opinion that would help this guy decide on which direction to take.

I've lost my sign in ID or I'd express my thoughts on the decision.

When I`m asked..for pure Acoustic Sound, the Martin is the Best !!..for Ac./El. the Ovation is Unbeatable..just remember that on a New Solid Top Heavy Gauge Might be Required..13 - 56 comes to mind.. :)

Depends what he's looking for. If acoustic sound is the criteria the Martin wins by a mile. Dave

Tell him to try both and decide for himself.

I think for 1K a person would have two great guitars.

Sound is subjective. Different people have different sounds that they like. This guy should play both guitar and make a decision based upon his results.

String gauge is not subjective. 13-56 is medium gauge, not heavy....

Yes, I have a Martin d15 and an 1861 balladeer and if the only criteria is close your eyes and listen to someone else play, I think the Martin would win fairly easily. I've played several Martin 16 series guitars that were total winners. Oddly enough, my balladeer gets played more than the Martin, and my Takamine, and my Elite lx ( which has great tone!). The fact is the shallow bowl is much more comfortable and the playability up and down the neck is smoother (plus it has a tuner bulit in, and it looks better! The AGF can be great (many good folks there), but the constant Seagull overhype and push drives me crazy.

Play them both is the best test, as many of you have stated.

I logged into the conversation on AGF to add my 2 cents...and proceeded to ramble on through the better part of a dollar. :D

After a mid-length Ovation defense, I suggested he...

Wait for it...

Play them both and decide what he likes best!

I have to admit I'm disappointed in the poll result though. I know Ovations are under-rated and under-valued, but I didn't know it was that bad!

Hey look on the bright side, as an acoustic guitar the Ovation got twice as many votes as a Telecaster ...

Consider the source. Post that same poll on this forum and you'd get 90% of the replies choosing the Ovation over the Martin. It means nothing.

Of course "play both and then choose" is the right answer. But there is nothing interesting to a chat forum if you make a post that says - "Hey guys, I'm going to play test two guitars and pick the one I like best. Wish me luck."

Tupperware Q : " as an acoustic guitar the Ovation got twice as many votes as a Telecaster ..."

They must`ve meant the SolidBody....now the HollowBody on the other hand.. :)

..would not mind trying those D`s EJ-18 ( 14 - 59 ) ...my axes pain me at times,so I chastise them with some good solid metal...that `ll teach those little beasts.. :)
