So I visited the music maker today & bought a capo (kyser) for $19.95 & a folding music stand for $17.95. I thought they seemed a little pricey compared to guitarcenter.com, but I don't have a guitar center close to me, nor many other music stores, but I doubt I'll go back there again.

I still need a stap & an amp chord.

I forgot to add that I am enjoying the capo, what a fun new toy!!

But how can I figure out what key I'm playing in with it???

At standard tuning, a totally open strum on the first five strings (no E) is an A11...

Was that any help?

A11?? Is that a key?

One music book that I have is all in the key of G, the other is all in the key of C. So when I apply the capo at each fret higher does it go up one key or how does that work exactly?

...I don't have a guitar center close to me...

If you're in Yorba Linda, there's one in Brea on Brea Blvd. between Bastanchury and Imperial Highway. Just don't take the salesperson's advice too seriously!

I'm a little ways east of Yorba, not too far actually, but the traffic on the 91 is what keeps me from heading that way most of the time.......maybe some day I'll head to the one in Brea. I used to live in Covina & visited that guitar center a few times, I just never liked it. Always liked the fret house though.

If you're playing in the C book for instance, if you put your capo on the second fret, and play with the fingering in C, you will now be playing in D. If you put put the capo on the 5th fret, you'll be playing the song in F. Yu can figure it out by counting up the notes ... one for each fret, i.e C, C#, D, Eb, E, F. Now you can do the same thing with the G chord book.

Hope this helped.

P.S. If you have a local store, I find it better to pay a little bit more and support your local Mom and Pop. Just don't let them rip you off. Don't expect them to offer the mass merchandiser pricing, but they shouldn't charge you list price either. Research the prices and be a smart consumer. My local store now knows me and gives me decent pricing without having to ask, and I like to be able to deal with humans. Also being able to check out and touch new gear without some kid butchering Iron Man at 12 is a bonus. ;)
