Location: Minden, Nebraska | Sad to hear the news. I believe Joe was truly 'a musician's musician' who influenced many. Weather Report was a monster group centering on Joe and Wayne Shorter, and they introduced some fabulous drummers and bassists through the years. The Joe Zawinul Project was great in recent years too.

More than anything else, I guess that shows what a bunch of band dorks we were back then. |

No question Jaco was brilliant, but the fact that the band was also superb with Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, Victor Bailey, et al. indicates that he was never the 'core'. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. |

| He was responsible for a lot of the arrangements and wrote half the stuff on Miles' In a Silent Way. Him and Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock playing two keyboards on that album are fantastic. The backcloth they put up for Miles Shorter and McLaughlin to play over is just wonderful. So understated - he was never one to show off in any way shape or form.
He was a monster musician, one of the true greats. |

My view was that Zawinul was always the creative genius behind the band, but that during the period that Pastorius was with them, no member could touch him (Jaco, that is) for pure instrumental proficiency.

Location: NJ | back in the day I met this bim that went by the name valerie angel. she claimed that her and jaco's families were friends in the philly area and that they were lovers and had a bunch of his gear and clothes in storage.
like many of the nutcases I have met in my life I never was able to prove her right or wrong but it was a good story.
at one of the last philly guitar shows there was an amp for sale that was allegedly's jaco's and was on stage with him etc. people will do anything to jack up the price of gear.
as for jaco he was truely inspired but much like hendrix if you really examaimed his playing was sometimes sloppy and played out of tune.
really a shame that drugs take these people from us.

| I've still got a complete unopened 20 phial pack of morphine in the fridge. Believe me al - you don't want it. The side effects of morphine are horrendous. I'll spare you the details but cocaine and heroin would be a much more pleasant experience. |
