Joined: June 2020 Posts: 83 | Hi ALL Just got delivered this nice 1613 in virtually new condition. Unfortunately the guitar has developped a finish crack during shipping. How should I be concerned? I don't think this concerns the wood, but I'd like to hear from you Ovation experts. Would you be concerned by this?

As to repair, you might attempt a drop-fill protocol with a CA adhesive. There are some good tutorials elsewhere on the OFC discussion threads.

I mean, do you it that this repair is necessary to avoid the crack to develop, or just to fix and secure it? Sorry for these questions but I am not expert and would really like to take good care of it. Thank you.

Yes indeed, that's the crack I am talking about

It doesn't look like it will run further, but under the rosette if it changes direction it could continue. To me that is the unknown, what it does under the rosette. Super thin CA glue from a luthier supply or good hobby shop is what you'd use. StewMac or Luthier's Mercantile are both reputable online sellers. Use a needle thin tip to put one drop at a time into the crack. It will run quickly in, then put in another drop. In just a few seconds the crack will be filled. Wait for the glue to set completely. Then wipe any excess off with acetone on a clean white rag (old t-shirt, etc). Acetone dissolves the CA glue but won't harm the clear factory finish. The repair will be invisible. Acetone shouldn't damage the wood or rosette, but I would put blue painter masking tape on those areas to be sure.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. That is more than enough for me, I really appreciate the very knowledgeable people in this forum and trust their opinion.
Thank you very much!

Good point, thanks a lot! I think I will discuss all this information with my tech, I really want to avoid any further damage to the guitar.
