A year sooner than planned due to various reasons, and quite welcomed overall. Still, it is strange to go to the airport and not be able to park in the employee lot or go through crew tsa screening. So, now that I'm retired ... there should be more time to play guitar! That is, in between skiing, camping, road tripping, and welcoming new grandchildren to the pack.

Quality of life issues with work rules and chronic under-staffing had been pushing me closer to the decision. Knowing several friends/family who died in recent months added motivation to get out. The profession changed tremendously over the last 30 years, mostly not for the better. So then one day it was like a switch was thrown, where the pay wasn't worth the cost. When I hear what crews are going through right now I am so glad I jumped when I did.

I'm buildiung my own and personal guitars now. Currently a Strat with all selfmade or high end parts, except of the neck. The first one was the Legend-Viper, then a LP for my son, then a Tele and now the Strat...... The next one maybe is for a Friend of the band, but he don't know what he want.... a guitar which can "everything".... maybe something like a VXT....? Good luck and stay healthy!! Bernie

My only regret so far is that I haven't played guitar enough since retirement. Sometimes the thought that I have plenty of time just leads to procrastination. I hope you have at least one guitar and ski buddy. I'd like to ski more, but need to find someone more my "speed".

Thanks! Luckily I have a great wife who loves skiing. For music I am hoping the end of covid will open up people's willingness to gather to play.

I've been offered a few jobs, but I'm way to busy to take one. My time is spent skiing in winter, looking after our orphaned joey kangaroos (3 at present), playing guitar and working on my home.

She expected to travel more (she apparently forgot the 5000 mile road trip we made last summer), but I am fine with just not having to work. She quit downhill skiing, but we did some Nordic a couple days ago. I haven't had time to get bored much. A tree fell through the roof of our cabin a couple weeks ago, so that will take care of the next few months of my retirement plans.

The same thing happened to my grandparent's house, back home when I was a teenager, (c.1974), after a tornado went through the village! It made quite a mess, for sure. They just cut up the tree, and used it for firewood, and repaired the roof ASAP. Fortunately, it didn't take too long, being in the summer. I have been told musicians never really retire. Les Paul actually played until he passed away at 95, (however, I think he came out of retirement at one point?), Ubie Blake, died playing his piano at 103, and George Beverly Shea was still singing at 105, before he died! GBS was born in the same village as myself, ie., Winchester, Ontario, CANADA, so he was/is a great influence on me. I always tell people that I'll play as long as God gives me strength. Don't give up playing your Ovation guitars. I hope they weren't damaged by the fallen tree. Mike S. Otttawa, ON., CANADA Edited by Mike S. 2022-01-17 10:33 AM

My sincere apologies to both Mark in Boise, and FlySig, for my mistake. Keep playing all your Ovations, and Stay Safe! Mike S. Ottawa, ON. CANADA
