In late 1970 I obtained my very first Ovation guitar, a brand new Balladeer 1111-4 from Red Bank Music in Neptune NJ. Sadly, some years later I sold it but to this day I still believe it was one of the very best sounding Ovations I have ever played. Amazingly, in 2019 I stumbled across its twin cousin exactly the same configuration and just 20 serials separating the pair and my heart would not let me pass it up. I sent it to the factory for a slight neck reset, fret dressing and general spa treatment. Not cheap but obviously worth the investment.

This guitar plays like a charm and rings like a bell, not to mention that it looks like a well aged and preserved beauty queen. Unfortunately other than the sentimental value, this guitar doesn't really server a purpose in my small collection and literally never gets played. So I think the right thing to do is pass this on to someone who (like me) will appreciate the history and knows the sonic wonder and power of these older instruments.

Price is $575. including shipping to any of the 48 US States. Sorry, USA sales only.

DETAILS:

o Model 1111-4 Balladeer (acoustic only)
o Serial number G-657 manufactured in 1970
o Deep bowl, original laid glass type
o Sitka spruce top, nicely aged to honey/amber tone
o Original style X BRACING
o Walnut WINGED style bridge
o Raised floral rosette
o Ebony fretboard with very minimal fret wear
o 5 piece maple/mahogany neck
o Old style chrome KLUSON tuners (no tarnish)
o Ovation brown hardshell case

Overall this guitar is in immaculate condition. Three very minor cosmetic scars mentioned below the photos, but overall this is a solid 9.5/10 guitar and it would be hard to find a 1970 Ovation preserved any better than this one. Not trying to make a sales pitch, but the factory work alone cost me $220, plus shipping will be another $100 so this is really a rock bottom price for such a great instrument and I'll probably regret letting this one go in due time

PM me if you want it or have questions.

THANKS FOR LOOKING

Three very small cosmetic issues to note. See photos below ...

1. There is a very fine finish crack extending from the edge of the bridge north towards the rosette. Very difficult to see or photograph.
2. There is a very small chip to one of the headstock ears, not a broken ear just a ding or chip out of the very tip
3. There are some small "micro-cracks" in the rosette but it is perfectly solid and functional, very hard to see

The hardshell case is a bit "rough". Perfectly functional but the compartment door is missing and and the lid strap is detached. Handle is is great shape but several of the latches are tarnished and they work, but not smoothly.

Very nice. Your experience is not unlike my own. I purchased, brand new in 1976 an Artist Model 1121-4 for $275; from Brown's Music in Concord, CA. About 10 years later, I used it as part of a down payment for an Elite.

Fast forward to 2020 and I just wanted an Artist bowl Ovation. I found a 1621-4, almost the same vintage and purchased it. I play the CL's mostly, but I'm not getting rid of the Artist; ever.

Wow what an appealing offer. Unfortunate I already have way more guitars than I ever needed or wanted.

You know I'm already guitar poor for some foreseeable months, but somebody really should snatch this up! This issue and SN date wreaks of classic Ovation-ness.. and in great condition, too.
But the part I don't get is when you said "my small collection".
Small?? Relative to what.. like.. Guitar Center?

I was referring to the number of guitars on hand at any given GC store period.. Ovation or otherwise. I mean, if a guy actually "loses" a guitar in the midst his case pile like you did with the 1627.. then yeah.. that's someone beyond a "small collection". Your modesty ain't holdin' no water. Just admit it. It's okay. We're the OFC.. and we're here to help.

Thanks, 2WD. Now if I could just play like Dykes I would gladly toss guitar poorness to the wind and buy Standingovation's 1111 (among many others, I'm sure).
