Hi ALL

Title says it all: my beloved 1614 Folklore has a very light bulging under the bridge, I keep my guitars under controlled humidity most of the time so I would like to know if I should be using a lighter string gauge, maybe?

I usually use 0.12. What do you say? Thank you very much.

If your strings are .12, that might be a problem. (J/K) .12 = 1/8"

I use extra lights to keep the belly to a minimum. (.010)

I gotta tell you, on my 1537, 87C, and Savage retopped Legend, I have always used .13-.56 (mediums). .12-.52 (? whatever lights are) on the GC RI. The 1537 is almost 40 years old and I've had it almost 30 or those. Never had a bulge in any of my guitars. Even the Legend which has a slightly thinner top than that which came from the factory. And Dan, we're past the 5 year mark on both the Legend and the Classical. Both just keep sounding better and better......

I keep 12s on all my Ovations. A little bit of belly isn't abnormal. The top cannot stay absolutely flat without being too stiff to sound good. But it shouldn't be enough of a belly that it causes the action to be too high. One of my center hole Ovations had a lot of belly which turned out to be a couple of braces that had come unglued. It is a matter of how much bulge there is and whether it is causing problems.

Thank you guys for chiming in.
Honestly the belly is not important at all, the action is low and the guitar is very easy to play. It is probably only in my head, my tech says that the guitar is absolutely fine, I just keep camparing my Folklore and my Classic 1613 and the latter is so flat that it makes me think that yhe Folklore has some issues.

Wait-a-minute. Isn't the 1613 a nylon-string instrument, and the Folklore a steel-string? Big difference in string tension, right?

Yes indeed, there is a big difference in tension. Nevertheless, even if I am well aware of this, the fact that the 1613 is perfectly flat ant the Folklore is not, well...that really bugs me. That is why I am asking for your opinion, I love my Folklore and want to avoid any possible damage to it.

Fair enough. Try the lighter strings, & see if that makes a difference. It certainly shouldn't make it worse!

,12 doesn't seem that heavy to me if you want to go with lower tension try Thomastik Infled strings or Silk and Steel
