Hi, all.

A friend gave me an Ovation Mandolin with a broken nut. While I've built a bunch of mandolins, this is the first one I've ever seen with ball end strings. That should have been my first clue.

I've got the old strings off and have ordered some new ones via Strings by Mail (good people, those). The Ovation web site offers no mandolin strings for sale, and no recommendations on where to get them, so I'm flying blind here. Can anybody recommend other sources, with better selections?

I've finally figured out how to remove the back plate and get the battery out. But when I went to replace the battery, I find that there is no marking anywhere about which side of the case is for the (+) side of the battery and which is the (-) side. Maybe there was a sticker on the case at some point, but it ain't there now. What's the "Ovation format" for those things? There's a black wire and a white wire, and I know that white is usually negative, except when it's not.

Finally, is there a manual for these existing somewhere online, or a schematic, or something? (Again, the Ovation web site was no help there.) Information on recommended string gauge, etc. would be most helpful. The fact that it's a pretty long scale for a mandolin (13 3/4") leads me to think it was designed for bluegrass.

From what I've read, the MCS148 is reputedly a great sounding mando if you plug it in. I'm keen to try it, once the battery and string issues are sorted out. And I'm looking forward to meet other Ovation mando players.

Thanks. I'll do that!

Actually, making a new mandolin nut is no problem for me. I've made dozens of them. And there doesn't seem to be a place on the Ovation web site where parts can be ordered, anyway.
