Question on what OP Pro fits in what can.
Looking for thoughts on what Preamps can be swapped and be expected to work.

Specifically.
Vip
OP Pro studio
OP studio
iDea

Backstory.
When I bought my USA 1778T the preamp did not work so I got if pretty cheap.

I did not care at the time as I was intent on replacing with the iDea preamp.
(apparently someone may of tried to swap in a OP Pro Studio at the store.)
I “shelved” the useless OP Pro as none of the Ovations I had at the time had the same pin outs.(3 pair of offset contacts.)

Fast forward to today….. I noticed the Idea Pre Amp can I replaced has the same 4 pair symmetrical contacts that my later guitars came with.

I slapped it in and it worked. (Meaning Drive/Gain knobs, and Expressor, EQ sliders).

Begging the question how much flexibility does one have to move Pre amps around if the pin outs in the can are the same?

This has been discussed before.
Found this on the OFC Site which sounds promising.

My pause is the ovation web site caution under accessories showing the OP Pro Studios and OP Pro
"Interchangeability with other Ovation preamp models is not guaranteed".

Absent good schematics (which I have never seen anywhere), we are stuck with guessing and experience.

Some instruments have the XLR output. I believe this is just an impedance matching circuit with nothing active going on, so you should not have to worry about if there is or isn't an XLR jack. However, some preamps accept phantom power and others do not, which is via the XLR cable. Furthermore, I believe there is a difference in the circuit board the XLR jack attaches to depending on whether phantom power was designed for that guitar. Therefore, I would definitely NOT apply phantom power to any Ovation unless you categorically know the entire thing was built for it.

Aside from that, any 4 pin can should work perfectly with any 4 pin module. The iDea has the extra mini-jack but I don't know of any compatibility problem involving it.

To add, we've had guitars with iDea, Op30, OpPro, OpPro Studio, and VIP preamps. So that is the basis of my experience.
