In particular, he eyes my 1993 5869 5p Custom Legend. It ticks all his boxes with black finish (even the black pearl finish of the 5p) the abalone bound body, fingerboard, and ring, carved bridge and gold hardware. Bottom line, he loves the bling - of course it plays really well to but he has a few of guitars that play well and the sound is great. To that end, it would seem I have a few options in finding him one he likes as well and more options with trade offs. There are a couple Di Meola's on reverb; a 1999 and 2008. Any construction or major differences in those two other than some of the cosmetic (the '99 has a larger more decorative ring). They don't have the abalone fingerboard but that's about it. I've been keeping an eye out for any Nakao's but yet to see any. Leads are appreciated, lol. I gather some of the collector series had abalone fingerboards, etc. Any other suggestions are welcome. Doesn't have to be a center sound hole but a cutaway is probably a must for him.

The main difference between the early Al DiMeola and the 1769ADII is the second generation uses the newer lyrachord GS bowl which is lighter and more resonant, the 1769ADII also has the newer OP Pro preamp, with the inlaid rosette. Most of the guitars we are talking about are deep bowls are I think your 5869 was a mid-bowl not sure how much that matters to you, personally I'm a huge deep bowl fan I just wanted to mention it.

Its a bit of a treasure hunt and finding the right person at the right moment of weakness (lmao) who wants to sell it. The hunt continues... ![]()

I wanted him to have it on the wall with his other guitars so its visible and gets played but still humidity controlled so also ordered an acrylic wall case from Amazon. He saw the case I had ordered for him in the app. and slipped by making a comment showing he assumed he was getting an acoustic guitar of some kind - ah, a teaching moment! I kept sending him reverb posts asking if he liked this one or that one right up to the end. Christmas morning we did NOT give him the guitar (at least not right away) - told him the case was expensive and now we had time to find him a guitar for his birthday in March... He looked bummed but sucked it up. We finish presents and started eating breakfast when I had him go get me something from a bedroom where I had conspicuously put the guitar. He came back with it puzzled - we had him open it and he loved it. I think he will be more careful next time so he doesn't ruin the surprise! Adding a couple photos too - Thanks again for helping find this gem!
