The 1996 Book Elite was modeled after the 1997 Collectors.  Which one is the one to have if you can only have one of them. Both in mint condition.

Thanks!

You will probably get 50/50 replies. I have owned both of them at the same time and sonically I can hear no difference. In my personal opinion ...

Book Elite
- fewer made, more rare
- better electronics (I am a fan of the Optima preamp)
- naked fretboard
- abalone headstock trim

87 Collector
- nicer headstock facing
- nicer epaulets (if you like innies)
- nicer fretboard inlays if you like markers
- carved bridge

I was not disappointed in either one of them ...

One difference that I've found that always leans me towards the 87C is the finish on the neck and headstock. I like a gloss neck and headstock. the Book Elite feels and looks like there is no finish. Never cared for the feel or look. The 87C doesn't have a high gloss neck (like my 1537), but it's enough to look and feel much better. Is it considered a satin finish? Regardless, that issue makes a difference to me. Also never cared for the outie epi's......
