Hello! I just got an Ovation Celebrity CC 245 12 string and have several questions about it. I need technical help and just maybe tips on how to play it! I really need to be able to post in the other forum sections please! Thank you!

My Celebrity's string action is way too high for my taste. I have read various places around the internet on how to adjust this, but get mixed information. Some say adjust the truss rod, some say remove shims form the saddle. The person I got the guitar from says there is no shims under its saddle, but I have not verified this. It does seem to be sitting pretty high. The truss rod adjustment seems easy, but several places I have been to say do not mess with this unless you know what you are doing, which I do not! I just play the guitar for fun and am not a musician or an expert. Since this is an Ovation forum, I figured I would get the best answers here. Any help would be appreciated!

Well the easiest place to start is check for shims. You should put on new strings anyway... it's a new to you guitar... so that's easy enough.

If there are shims, remove them, retune and report back. Another couple of things you can do with the strings off the guitar are check that the frets are level. Basically take the endge of a credit card, start at one end and work your way the length of the neck. The credit card or whatever you use whould reach across three frets. Try to rock it back'n forth. If it doesn't rock on the middle fret, move up one fret and try again. It should teeder-todder on the fret that's in the middle of two card. Do this along the line that each string would make.

Finally, with the strings off... take a straight edge and see if the neck is flat. This is a worthless exercise if there are high frets. The neck may be bowed forward or back... that's not a bad thing at all, just good to know based on what you find when you remove the shims.

Thank you. That sounds like a good game plan and will do that as soon as I can. Will report back with the results!

I removed the strings and there was one shim, which is now out. There is a slight difference in the string action, but it is still too high. I forgot to put a straight edge on the neck when the strings were off, but have done a trick I saw on Youtube to see if the neck was bowed, and it seems flat. All this involved was holding down one set of strings on the 1rst fret, and the one closest to the guitar body and look at the string clearance in between. The neck does not seem to be bowed one way or the other. What is my next step?

The next step... I am going to upgrade your membership. (zap)
You are now a member, so feel free to use the pool and valet parking.

You can also post in the General Posting section.
Only a few people can respond in this section...
You may get more responses in General.

As to fixing your string height...
Hopefully there are still other options.
Lighter strings. Shave the Saddle. Adjust the Truss rod.
All the way up to a neck reset...

Anyway. You are free to post elsewhere in the site.
You will also be able to post photos as needed for advice.

Welcome.
