Subject: Loose strap button - Custom Legend 1988

The bottom strap button on my 1719 Custom Legend is very sloppy. It's screwed tight into the insert, but the insert itself is loose, and can't reach the inside of it through the soundhole to see what's going on.

Any ideas to secure the insert?

Location: Always beautiful canyon country of Utah		Dunlop Dual Design Straplock or any facsimile thereof. Use a nut on the inside to secure the button. I did it on my Custom Legend and is is stronger than strong!

Ovation uses a molly to allow the strap buttons to be secured to the body. Here's one that's ready to be installed.



It sounds like the molly has enlarged the hole to the point where it can flop around freely.

There's only one of two things you can do.

1) Remove the old molly, patch the hole to return it to the original size and install a new molly.
2) Glue the molly into place by wicking glue (epoxy or CA) into the enlarged hole.

If you can't reach into the sound hole to feel the strap button right now, you're going to have a difficult time with option #1. This requires that you first, remove the old molly, fill the hole with fiberglass cloth and resin, then drill a new hole and install a new molly.

The potential problem with #2 is that you might get glue in the molly threads which would hinder or prevent you from re-installing the strap button screw after the glue cures.

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR		Once you get the "mollie" out... You can maybe get to re-use it.
Otherwise, while you are looking for a new "mollie" you can just use a Wood Screw and a small, 1 inch, block of wood. That will work for a while.

Thanks for the advice all!

I understand how the molly works from all this - flanges out in side the guitar once crewed into right? I guess removing it may be tricky if I can't access the inside though. I wondered about drilling it out, but it will just spin. Perhaps some fret pliers could cut the outside part of the molly off, leaving the internal flange to fall into the guitar.

Once the old molly is out, are new ones available? I'm sure I could make something work with a toggle bolt as shown above.

This Custom Legend I bought new as a 17 year old in 1989. I sold it because I needed the money in 1994, and just bought it back 25 years later! Just needs a few things tidied up

Not my collection sadly (I'm getting there though ). That's some of the collection of the guy who had my Custom Legend all these years - that's when I first saw it again and began negotiations to buy it back!

Heck, as long as you have at least one Ovation on the wall you're in good company. Oh, and congratulations on reclaiming it. Lots of people I know, including myself, continue to fail in their pursuit of lost loves. I once lost a Custom Legend to a 454 short block trade. The motor crashed not long after, and I've never seen that pretty little CL again. Stupid me.

We found a solution...

DENTAL FLOSS! Between the outside of the guitar and the collar of the molly.

Worked a charm
