I'm in Kansas City visiting some friends and playing guitar. One of them has an early 80's 1624, a Country Artist w/ a molded bowl and stacked volume tone control. It doesn't look like it has a K-bar in the neck (no bolts holding the neck on, a truss rod cover with adjustment under it) but it's got the heaviest neck on an Ovation nylon string that I've ever run across.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Yeah, it's probably strung with heavy guage strings. Enjoy Kansas City. They got some good Ribs there.

My thought: Arthur Bryant's BBQ if it's still there.

As far as I recall none of the nylon strings ever had a K-bar, they were all regular neck rods with headstock access. Wood varies in weight, maybe the neck is particularly dense mahogany.

I have a similar 1624 with trussrod and stacked controls. It seems neck-heavy to me- I find it hard to hold in a classical playing position without a strap. My cheap Yamaha is more balanced.

I've had Ovation solidbodies for years, but the 1624 is my first acoustic. Since I have no experience with other Ovation acoustics, I just assumed they all had solid, heavy necks.
