Location: Germany | This week I got my Josh White back from the service department. I sent Kim the guitar as I didn´t like the appearance of the top (repaired crack, damages) and some damages in the bowl as well. They replaced the top, bowl and bridge to make a completely new body. The neck, fretboard, tuners and the label are all what survived from the original.
The appearance of this rebuild ist stunning. They made an exact replica of the original guitar (two-piece top, inlaid MOP rosette, white binding). In fact they didn´t take the parts they currently use for the Josh White reissue model (golden rosette, vintage yellowed binding) but took the parts that have the same appearance as back in the 60s. The rebuild looks exactly like the original but is made with the materials and technology of today.
I can confirm what has been said here about the service department. Excellent communication and outstanding workmanship. Superb setup exactly to my needs. Sweet sound. I am more than pleased. I´m sure this rebuild looks better than the original looked like when it was new.

Location: Germany | Well, naturally a side-by-side comparison is not possible. And as I I sent the orginal back to the mothership four month ago I'm not absolutely sure what I remember of the original's sound. But my first impression was: "Hey, how did they do that? This rebuild sounds just like the original". Very sweet. But maybe it's just an illusion.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Personal opinion - Sealed tuners work fine, but the big drawback (for me) is that they are so damn heavy. Some sealed tuners weigh over 1/2 pound more than a good set of open gears. Couple that with some ovation guitars that are neck heavy to begin with and the whole instrument just feels way our of balance to me. It's a very expensive proposition, but slowly and surely I've been swapping out my remaining ovations and adamas to open gears (Gotoh and Weavery). Dave |
