Yesterday, Vision's (Leslie) mother suffered a stroke. She is in the hospital in Dallas and has had several small complications which thankfully the medical staff was able to get them under control. This has affected her sight, her memory; and her speech. It was termed moderate but did continue a bit overnight. Her condition seems to have stabilized however for the present and she was able to converse with Leslie and her sister this morning. The prognosis is still not known and as you can imagine, Leslie can use all of our good wishes, thoughts, and prayers! She will be quite busy over the next several days and may only have time to read the posts to this thread in the evening. I asked before posting this and she defiantly wanted everyone to know. Thanks to everyone in advance for all your caring!

Hey everyone - just got home from a very long day at the hospital. Mom was fairly good with her talking and comprehension this morning but as the day went on, it went down hill. I am sure some of it is how tired she gets as the day drags on. You can't get any restful sleep in a hospital.

They are also trying to decide if she has had a heart attack along with the stroke . Her heart enzymes where elevated so they are now concentrating on that issue. Will find out tomorrow if it was a true heart attack or the results of the Atrial fib (fluttering of the heart) that she went into last night that has caused the level to rise. They were able to get the Atrial fib under control fairly quickly.

She started getting combative again around 6:00pm like she did the night before but this time my sister and I were there and I gently talked to her and she calmed down - when I left she was finally sleeping. Hopefully, she will not try and get out of bed and make a break for it like she did last night. That caused an uproar in the ICU when they saw her attempting to get out of bed. I believe her words to them, "you can't do anything for me so I am going home". That is my mom.....always the fighter.

Thank you for all your prayers and well wishes - it means a great deal to me. The OFC is truly a great family.

One day at a time.
Leslie

Thanks to all who have sent their best wishes: here is an update from Leslie by way of me as she will be at the Hospital today and tonight:

Hey Everyone,
I am taking the afternoon shift so I have some time to give a quick update My sister is there and like yesterday - mom is sitting up and eating a good breakfast. I talked to her on the phone and she was making perfect sense and saying everything right - they want her to sleep as much as possible today because she was combative again last night and got very little sleep- this time they brought out the ankle restraints and they still have the jacket on her. I am sure that made her happy. Dr. Chen, her neurologist, explained that it is very common, in the early hours of the morning, for patients with brain injuries to act this way - they are confused and do not know where they are....I think I would be acting the same way. :)
Update from both doctors.........
She is doing great - not completely out of the woods, but they are very happy that she is basically stable and is not showing any signs of regressing. One doctor said he is not convinced that she had more bleeding since he cannot see where a second catscan was taken. This is her internist that I have always had problems with......the neurologist over rode all his orders :) She is progressive, aggressive and doesn't take shit off anyone when she knows that she is right. Thank God for Dr. Chen - Dr. Jones might have killed her with his treatments.
I talked to Dr. Chen about the elevated heart enzymes and she said that they are not concerned - it was probably a reaction from the atrial fib she had the first night - she also is now talking about her going to rehab for a while ....to get her strength back and work on her speech......I will take that over once she is home. That degree in speech pathology will finally come in handy. :)

I am freaking tired, sore and about to drop but the news today has helped tremendously - not sure when they will decide that she is good enough to go to a private room or go to rehab but unless something unforeseen happens - it is looking good that she will not be in ICU much longer - maybe a few more days. I keep forgetting to ask if her vision in that eye will come back - so many questions and so little time to talk to the doctors when they have other critical patients who need their attention.

I am going to get ready now but wanted you to know the latest. Thanks so much for your prayers everyone - they are doing their jobs. :)

Hugs,
L

For anyone who has gone through this, you all know and understand: for those who have not, there is a chance that you will some day...I know in my own experience, giving back to the ones who gave all for me is simply the thing to do.
Beal, I want to thank you for the note about playing the guitar for Leslie and family: that is so great! It is what we do! Music can accomplish much!

The best thing you can do is force her to do the rehab and stay with the exercises. It might be very difficult for someone who is not used to exercise. My mother-in-law had a series of strokes, progressively worse, and would not follow doctor's orders. She became increasingly feeble until she died of complications from a broken hip. All in her 60s, which is right around the corner for me.
Keep her active and best of luck to you and yours.
