Hey folks:
Does a wood topped Adamas sound basically like a 1537?

It SHOULD ... but it's gonna take 25 years to find out for sure.

The one I played at the roadshow sounded the same as my 2007 Collector’s. The WTA has, or at least that one had, a deep contour bowl. The fit/finish was a step above Ovation, worthy of the Adamas name. I don’t recall which preamp it had.

To me it was the pinnacle of wood topped LX era Ovations.

35 years.

I have played a couple but my main thought was that they have a very compressed sound. They hadn't opened up yet. How long that would take, who knows?

I have a wood topped Adamas prototype for the 1537. Two-knobber stereo FET, been hanging on the bandroom wall for 15 years. Lots of amplified noise in that room so that top has seen lots of vibration. Not sure its the same as being played, but close I’m told. And it’s still for sale!

Fit/finish a stop above Ovation? I was under the impression that all Ovations had great fit/finish and nothing left the factory that was less than ideal. Am I wrong on this? The Ovations which I have and all those which i have seen appeared to have great fit/finish. One of the many reasons I love Ovations!!

Hello, Everyone,
Please correct me if I'm wrong this. The WTA is not new. WTA was/was not the original name back in the day for the prototype of what eventually became The Ovation Elite? It might be apples and oranges as to the 2 different designs, however. Just sayin' . Beal would know, I do believe.

Yes, historically the Adamas in the 70s abandoned the center soundhole, had a carbon sandwich top, and special bracing. Then in the 80s they figured that they could do that with a wooden top and after the prototypes they went into mass production as Elite series that were just basic Ovations with Epaulet tops and different bracing. But then, about 10 years ago they revisited the idea of a higher level Adamas with Adamas headstock and other features and labelled it a 2018WT or 1681WT. I don't think many were made ...

The WTA 12er Dave has pictures of in the post above - is doing fine...I made an offer to Dave - and the turkey accepted it...man - how long ago was that now Dave? It is a very nice sounding guitar - so well balanced. I have a couple other 12ers, a pacemaker 1115 - has that Dave Mason sound, I have a Guild Jumbo - IMHO it is the benchmark of acoustic 12 string sound - it has that jangled overtoney sound that is hard to replicate - think John Denver with his metal fingerpicks on Annie's Song. The Wood Topped Adamas is so solid, immaculate construction - I have never seen another one - if it is out there - I havent seen it yet. holds tune very well - and engineers love it because it stays under control. It is not real loud, but then - it does not have to be.

...So... does anyone have any idea why they opted not to have a natural wood (unpainted) top? ... and why they didn’t go with an Adamas I neck?

I'm guessing:

1) It looks nicer; and

2) To keep the cost down (would have been nice if they'd offered it as an option - I suppose if I had the money at the time, the custom shop would have done that).

I still want an Adamas WT, but SWMBO would kill me (unless I win lotto)

My 12er is heard in broadway shows from pit to shining pit, currently haunting notes in Miss Saigon. Has an OP studio+ for the electronics.

Well...call me a little old fashioned, but aside from the burst affect, I’ve never been impressed with the idea of covering a beautiful AAA Sitka spruce top with paint. I still dream of someday having a custom build with the 1537 and an Adamas I cauliflower headstock neck and bridge. I’d really like to hear the difference in sound with the other neck attached.
